The World Economic Forum “Davos” considered that the cost of living crisis caused by inflation constitutes the first global risk during the next two years.
In a statement reported by the German “Deutsche Welle” channel, the forum stated that inflation, which was exacerbated by the Ukrainian crisis and the reopening of the economy after the Corona epidemic, could cause severe tensions in several regions of the world by pushing millions of people into extreme poverty, while fueling societal tensions. The risk goes beyond the risks of natural disasters, extreme weather events or even conflicts.
The forum stated that geoeconomic conflicts and tensions have led to a series of closely interconnected global risks, including pressure on energy and food supplies that is expected to continue during the next two years, and a sharp rise in the cost of living crisis and the cost of debt, due to high energy prices and interest rates.
The Forum considered that these risks harm efforts to combat other long-term threats, especially climate change and the collapse of biodiversity, calling for urgent global cooperation measures with the aim of setting rapidly shrinking windows of action.
The forum warned that unless the world begins to cooperate effectively on climate change, the next ten years will lead to more global warming and environmental collapse, indicating that crises linked to geopolitical competition between different countries threaten to create societal distress on an unprecedented level with the absence of investments in health. education and economic development, which exacerbates the erosion of social cohesion.
