Walt changed the reward model for the messengers in the mountains, Jerusalem and Haifa. According to the company, the change was made, among other things, to benefit the couriers, but they went on strike

The shipping industry in Jerusalem and Haifa is in turmoil - and not because of the darkening sky.

This is the third day of the strike of hundreds of Volt couriers throughout Jerusalem and Haifa.

The messengers travel in long convoys throughout the cities in protest of the conditions of their employment.

What are they protesting?

Last week, the Walt delivery chain announced the change in the algorithm that calculates the wage conditions in the mountainous cities - something that infuriated hundreds of the company's couriers, who decided to go on strike.

The messengers claim that the new model significantly lowers their salary and they are not compensated properly.

: "They changed the payment model in a way that hurts our pockets. Until now it was NIS 18 as a base fee, and NIS for every 250 meters. For example: for a delivery from Mahane Yehuda market to Pisgat Ze'ev, a courier earns NIS 28. Calculated according to In the old system, you would have received 40 shekels."

So right now are you on strike until further notice?

"We are currently on strike - both in Jerusalem and in Haifa, cities with a topographical challenge. We want to say our yes. Even before this, the situation was not perfect, now we have decided to go head-to-head with them. We demand: bring back the old model. They made a change in their favor."

What do the restaurateurs think about it?

"The restaurateurs are also angry because they feel it in their pockets."

So why the rage?

The messengers were informed of the change only a week ago in a message.

On the one hand, they say 'you are self-employed', with all that is implied - insurance, taxes, motorcycle expenses.

So, so to speak, you are independent, but you have no independence: you cannot bargain - you have no say on the price, on the amount of deliveries.

They are taking advantage of the status of the messengers."

Bevelt claims that this is a good change that will not hurt your pocket.

"We are also in favor of changes, but the change made will only help their pockets, it has become less transparent. I was among the few messengers who were active yesterday and after seeing the change I understood what everyone was talking about."

Those who stand by the apostles, perhaps surprisingly, are the business owners.

They do this even though part of their livelihood was damaged due to the apostles' protest.

One of them told us, without attribution: "We have a lot of anger at Walt, but the apostles are not to blame, they are simply victims of a greedy and demanding attitude, just like us."

Volt reaction

"This week began an upgrade of the payment model for couriers in Haifa and Jerusalem, which rewards couriers based on the courier's effort for each delivery. The model is more accurate, constantly improving, and transparent to the courier from the first moment. The key innovations in the model, such as payment by distance traveled instead of air distance, came from feedback from couriers.

We We continue to be attentive to the messengers and accompany them throughout the period of change. The messengers' income will not be affected by the new model."
