Signs of a slowdown in the economy?

More Israeli women decide to embark on a challenging journey as an independent woman after they are unable to find the right workplace for them.

According to the summary data for the year 2022 of the Yozamot Atid association, which accompanies women in the process of setting up businesses, there was a jump of about 50% in the demand for entrepreneurship courses among women and an increase in the amount of businesses owned by women.

The data also shows that the majority of entrepreneurial activity comes from single mothers (54%), and that the majority of female entrepreneurs came in 2022 from the Jerusalem area (42.6%), and only about a fifth of them from the central area (21.3%).

This is compared to 2018, in which the majority of female entrepreneurs came from Tel Aviv (25%) and Haifa and the North (25%).

The rest of the female entrepreneurs operated in 2022 from the northern region (13.9%), the Sharon (8.6%), the south (8.2%), and the lowland (5.4%).

The majority of female entrepreneurs who opened a new business in 2022 are between the ages of 30-39 (37%) and 40-49 (29.4%) - similar to 2019, in which women aged 30-39 also made up the majority of new female entrepreneurs (35% and 27% respectively).

The rest of the female entrepreneurs in 2022 were aged 40-49 (14%), 20-29 (14.1%), 50-59 (14.7%), and 60 and over (4.8%).

Classic occupations

Despite the increase in their number, most of the businesses opened by women in 2022 came mainly from fields that are considered more "feminine" in nature, such as complementary medicine (11.7%), food (11.1%), class instruction (11.1%), workshop instruction (11.1%), art and work hand (8.3%), training (7.8%), coaching (7.8%), the beauty professions (6.3%), and architecture and interior design (5.6%).

The rest of the businesses opened by women in 2022 in Israel came from the fields of textiles, clothing and online sales, event production and design, administration, graphic design, photography, child care, tourism, techniques, technology and other fields.

Various international estimates for small business market surveys show that approximately 36% of approximately 400 million small businesses worldwide were owned by women at the beginning of 2022. And of the approximately 32 million small businesses in the US, the states of California and Texas in the US stood out in particular, with About 1.3 million and about 860 thousand businesses, respectively, were found to be owned by women.

The World Economic Forum describes an ever-growing trend of female entrepreneurship, which is gaining traction mainly in developing countries and among minorities.

The forum's data show a tripling of the amount of American entrepreneurs among the black population in the US in 2022 compared to 2019, and attribute this mainly to Corona.

Tzufit Gordon, CEO of Yozamot Atid

: "We learned that the corona virus mainly affected the fields of emerging businesses.

Thus, if in the past the fields of beauty constituted a higher percentage among the businesses opened by women, now there is an increase in the fields of complementary and paramedical medicine.

These are professions that usually do not require significant initial capital and high risk compared to setting up a cafe or restaurant.

At the same time, women do have access to grants and loans, among other things through the association's partners.

In addition, it can be seen that the decade between the ages of 30-40 is the decade in which more women find it suitable to start a business.

This is a stage where the halfway point of life approaches and towards which, and perhaps also as a response to the '40 age crisis', decisions are made as a response to self-fulfillment and a livelihood that combines starting a family and a job, alongside a higher earning capacity.

I believe that the personal maturity at these ages also strengthens the woman's self-confidence on the way to establishing the enterprise."

Bat-Sheva Moshe, chairman of Future Initiatives

, adds: "We notice that more ultra-Orthodox women are turning to entrepreneurship and opening small businesses in diverse fields and it should be noted that this is not surprising given that ultra-Orthodox society is very entrepreneurial in spirit.

This is also explained by the fact that the employment supply in ultra-Orthodox society is limited, along with a difficult economic reality, and therefore ultra-Orthodox women see entrepreneurship as a path that allows for a good livelihood on the one hand, along with the ability to maintain their values on the other hand, through continuing to manage the household and family.

The statistic that we have found to be consistent over the last few years is the single mothers, for whom entrepreneurship allows flexibility that is important to them in light of what is required of them as single mothers, alongside a sense of self-fulfillment and empowerment.

The fact that many of them can manage the business from their home allows them to balance with the needs of the home."
