Siemens Mobility has received an order from Indian Railways, the state-owned Indian railway company, to supply 1,200 locomotives with an output of 9,000 hp.

As the Munich group announced, the order is the largest locomotive order in the company's history.

It is about the delivery of locomotives over a period of eleven years and their maintenance and repair for 35 years.

The order has a volume of around three billion euros before taxes.

The locomotives are to be used in freight transport.

According to Siemens, they can pull up to 4,500 tons and drive at speeds of 120 kilometers per hour.

The drives are to be manufactured in a Siemens Mobility plant in India.

The installation is carried out together with employees from Indian Railways in the state of Gujarat.

Cooperation is also planned for maintenance.

India has one of the largest rail networks in the world and, according to Siemens, is one of the fastest growing rail markets.

"The country wants to almost double rail freight capacity," said Siemens CEO Roland Busch.

"I am very pleased about this major order, which will help to achieve the country's ambitious goals of building the world's largest electrified rail network." The locomotives would replace between 500,000 and 800,000 trucks over their life cycle.

Major order in Egypt

It's not the company's first major order in recent times.

In May 2022, Siemens Mobility announced the contract for the construction of a 2,000-kilometer high-speed network in Egypt.

A hundred trains and locomotives are to be delivered for this purpose.

According to Siemens, the share of the order agreed with two partners is 8.1 billion euros.

The railway network is to connect 60 cities in the country with trains that can travel at speeds of up to 230 kilometers per hour.
