Why should we continue to use coin to unlock the cart at the supermarket? - Walla! Of money

Shufersal announced a revolution in the service when it offered a facility to release carts with an ID card only, but now it has returned to the old method according to which you will have to be equipped with a NIS 5 coin. Why?

A few years ago, the Shufersal chain announced, as expected from the retail chain, a service revolution that would upgrade the shopping experience and free us from the need to prepare a NIS 5 coin in advance (or deposit an ID card at the main cash register...) using carts that could rely on an ID card.

The continuation of the revolution was supposed to be a gradual transition to smart carts that would also be used as a kind of cash register, by means of a kind of "bayonet" mounted on the cart.

From an inspection we conducted, it appears that the attempt to offer advanced technology to release a cart using an ID card was not successful and even resulted in a deficit of millions of shekels, apparently due to numerous malfunctions, thefts, rain that damaged the mechanism, and more.

Customers who came to the branches where they could take carts without using currency, discovered signs announcing a return to the use of currency as the only means of using the cart.

"Like taking care of the cell phone battery"

"It became like taking care of the battery of the mobile phone, always making sure before going to the supermarket that I have a NIS 5 coin in my wallet, so that I don't waste time looking for money, or leaving some certificate as a guarantee. The possibility to enter an ID number and release a cart was a great efficiency, and it was very convenient To shop like this at Shufersal is a pity. I don't understand why they go back to what used to be like this. It's like demanding payment only in cash. Just a punishment,"

says Udi, a resident of Jerusalem

(Shufersal Deal on Haumann Street in Talpiot).

And what about the smart cart?

The idea to upgrade the shopping experience came to fruition and ended a pilot period at the end of last year (2022). In the end, it was decided to integrate dozens of smart carts in dozens of large branches of the chain (about half of the 'Shoppersal Deal' branches).

The solution for an advanced shopping experience is actually a "handlebar" that is worn on top of a traditional cart, just like you know, which offers to calculate the amount of the purchase by itself and will even offer special offers or the use of coupons, so far, sounds futuristic and convenient but not entirely...

but not everything is smart In the smart cart department: in order to use a "smart cart", you will still have to release a regular cart from the cart facility, which is returning right now to require the use of currency...

Shufersal Group reported:

"In recent years, Shufersal tested a pilot of facilities for releasing a cart by entering the ID number , in order to optimize and improve the service to customers and ensure an available stock of carts. During the pilot period, no improvement was made in the required operation and service indicators, so it was decided to cancel it. We are looking at additional advanced technological solutions."
