According to a media report, the head of the Federal Employment Agency (BA), Andrea Nahles, expects the number of people on short-time work to increase in the current year.

"With currently 163,000 people on short-time work, we are slightly above the level of 2019 before the corona crisis, but we are approaching the 200,000 mark," said Nahles of the "Rheinische Post".

For 2023, the federal government assumes an annual average of 250,000 short-time workers based on the autumn key figures.

"We plan to spend 1.7 billion euros on this," the former federal labor minister told the newspaper.

“Companies no longer lay people off, but tend to resort to short-time work when problems arise.”

Nahles was optimistic about the 2023 job market.

»At the beginning of 2023 we have half a million more employees subject to social security contributions than a year ago«.

At the moment there is much to suggest that the economic prospects are improving.
