In the last few hours, a petition was circulated signed by most of the leading law firms in Israel, which issued, in an unprecedented manner, a joint statement referring to the legal reform proposed by the Minister of Justice.

These are 17 law firms, among which you can find: Mitar, Goldfarb Seligman, Herzog Fox Naman, Pearl Cohen Tzedek and more: "We, the undersigned, the largest law firms in Israel, wish to warn against harming the strength and independence of the judicial system and the The checks, balances and restraints that underpin the democratic regime that we are so proud of, alongside the fact that the State of Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people." This is how the message begins.

on behalf of 3,500 jurists

"It is important for us to emphasize that we respect the voter's decision and it is not a matter of right or left or of supporting one party or another. Naturally, the law firms signed here employ approximately 3,500 female and male lawyers from all sides and shades of the political spectrum.

As those who appear every day before The courts and tribunals, we know the legal system well, and we also recognize the system's difficulties and problems. In every system, continuous monitoring is required for difficulties and deficiencies that may arise in it, and appropriate corrections and improvements are accordingly required. Likewise, the legal system is not immune to criticism and the need to correct what needs correction - but this is not the way."

The message continues.

"In our opinion, the plan and the bills on the agenda do not produce an amendment or the construction of an independent, strong and robust judicial system, but on the contrary - they harm the independence and robustness of the judicial system and its ability to protect the rights of the individual against the actions of the government.

They fear damage to Israel's international status

We do not seek to reduce the powers of the Knesset as the legislative authority or to harm them, but to point out that the plan and the bill in the format presented threaten to harm, a serious harm, the basic democratic principle of separation of powers.

The implementation of the proposed plan may also damage the way the State of Israel is perceived on the world stage as a democratic country and seriously damage the Israeli economy in a way that will affect all the country's residents.

As those who are at the heart of legal, business and commercial activities in Israel, we wish to warn you that if the plan and the bills are implemented, there is a real concern for Israel's position as an international business center, foreign investments in Israel may at least dramatically, foreign entities will request to withdraw their money, the credit rating of Israel has decreased, and even our position in the OECD may be in danger.

We call on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice to hold a broad and open public discourse combining all currents in the public and professionals and to examine what corrections are required in the judicial system, while maintaining its independence, and this before a parliamentary debate is held on the proposals put forward by them." This is how the senior lawyers summarize the appeal.
