DIHK: Industry is increasingly losing trust in the state

Less bureaucracy, faster approvals, easier immigration: With a ten-point program, the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) is calling on politicians to make Germany more attractive as a business location again.

The past few years have shown that the state "is not sufficiently capable of acting, but in any case not fast enough," says the paper.

As a result, Germany is gradually losing its proven location advantages - reliable and transparent authorities, a secure energy supply, good education, sufficient skilled workers and a good transport infrastructure, the association complained.

The current crises now acted “like a magnifying glass”.

Germany lags behind in the expansion of renewable energies as well as in the renovation of dilapidated motorway bridges.

Relief from bureaucracy - automatic approvals for »routine cases«

The DIHK lists ten "tempo theses": Companies should be relieved of bureaucracy - but new regulations were added at the turn of the year.

As early as 2020, a medium-sized hospitality business had to spend 14 hours a week on bureaucratic duties - these hours "weigh like lead" in view of the shortage of skilled workers.

It takes "courage to courageously delete many well-intentioned regulations and requirements".

Long approval and test procedures are also a problem.

The DIHK suggested simple notification procedures or automatic approvals after a short period, especially for “routine cases”.

Projects that have been approved once could also do without a new approval if changes are made.

In addition, the trade association suggested that more individual approvals could be dispensed with and "parallel approvals" instead of working through everything piece by piece.

"Unfortunately, we haven't had the courage so far"

The LNG terminals, for example, could have been implemented very quickly.

The corona vaccine Biontech was also quickly launched.

"Unfortunately, there has been a lack of courage to transfer this positive finding to other promising research and development activities."

Based on the shortage of skilled workers, the association suggested faster and easier immigration procedures.

Visa procedures are "mostly still handled manually and thus delayed" or the appointments fail.

In addition, digitization must be promoted "with a close cooperation between business, society and politics with priority".

Last but not least, politics and administration also need a "personal impression of the practical effect of their own actions," concluded the DIHK.

A change of perspective will help here.

"Why not even let administrative employees or managers slip into the role of a business founder?"
