The health care group Asklepios literally takes the butter off the bread of health insurance patients in its Hamburg clinics: While private patients continue to receive butter with their daily meals, health insurance patients only receive margarine on their trays, according to a report in the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper - because of the increased food costs.

"In view of the increased purchasing, logistics and personnel costs in the subsidiary responsible for the food supply, savings are inevitable," the newspaper quoted a spokesman for the group as saying.

The purchase price of the yoghurt butter used up until now has more than doubled.

As a result of the conversion, around 330,000 euros could be saved annually at the Hamburg Asklepios locations.

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, butter cost 39.6 percent more in December than in the same month last year.

The increased food prices are apparently also causing problems for the clinic operators: the Asklepios Group puts the inflation-related additional costs in the food supply at 2.6 million euros per year.

According to the report, Asklepios cannot pass on the higher prices to patients.

"Despite significantly increased expenses, we have to make do with the lump sums and so far have not received any compensation for inflation," a spokesman is quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, at the Eppendorf University Hospital, which is publicly sponsored, butter is still being served to patients with statutory health insurance, according to the "Abendblatt".

Asklepios is one of the largest private clinic operators in Germany and claims to operate a total of around 170 facilities in 14 federal states.

Between January and September, the group made a profit of 104.9 million euros - that was around 5.7 million euros more than in the same period last year.
