Rheinmetall is apparently on the verge of a billion dollar deal with the US military.
Together with General Motors (GM), the armaments company could, according to its own statements, soon push ahead with the expansion of the US Army's truck fleet.
An American subsidiary of Rheinmetall is said to be working with the General Motors subsidiary GM Defense to build prototypes for the US military's heavy trucks.
The order is the first phase of a major procurement program, the Düsseldorf-based company announced on Monday.
For contractual reasons, a Rheinmetall company spokesman initially did not want to provide any information on the order value for the prototype phase.
In the US media, a volume of a good 24 million US dollars has been mentioned for several companies for this first phase.
The US Army wants to replace its truck fleet with up to 40,000 new trucks in the so-called Common Tactical Truck program.
The entire program is worth up to 14 billion US dollars, the equivalent of around 13 billion euros.
Rheinmetall and its partner want to offer the HX3 truck, which is based on commercial trucks from the VW and MAN Traton brands.
Rheinmetall teamed up with GM Defense for the project last year.
