The federal government has passed the draft law for the 49-euro ticket for public transport. It should be offered from May and clear the "tariff jungle," promises Minister of Transport Wissing.

The 49-euro ticket clears another hurdle: In order to secure the financing of the Germany ticket until 2025, the federal government wants to make 1.5 billion euros available annually.

This emerges from the draft law for the so-called regionalization law, which the cabinet passed on Wednesday.

The federal states also want to provide 1.5 billion per year.

"This is a huge reform," said Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing about the ticket for 49 euros, which will be valid throughout Germany from May.

"Especially in rural areas, people benefit." The low price is only one element: "Local public transport is stuck in the jungle of tariffs.

We are now freeing him with the Deutschlandticket.« Wissing was alluding to the different prices and regulations in the around 75 transport associations with hundreds of companies.

However, the draft law that Reuters has seen makes it clear that the price of 49 euros will not have to remain the same in the coming years.

There is talk of "an introductory price of 49 euros per month with a monthly cancellable subscription".

It is also said that for the years after 2023, the federal and state governments would clarify together how the financing with the "agreed grants of 1.5 billion each" and the ticket income will be ensured.

For the year 2023, however, the financing is likely to be secured, since the ticket only has to be financed from May and thus only for eight months of the year.

In addition, the federal government has pledged to take on a larger share for this year if necessary.

The Germany ticket is to be the successor to the 9-euro ticket from the summer, which was sold more than 50 million times.

It was valid from June to August and you could travel nationwide by bus and train for nine euros a month.

This principle should also apply to the new Deutschlandticket for 49 euros.

There should also be a job ticket with an additional five percent discount if employers pay at least 25 percent of the price.

The ticket should be used digitally, for example by cell phone or chip card.

That will also give the transport sector a boost in digitization, said Wissing.

For a transitional period until the end of the year, however, the submission of a QR code on paper should also be accepted.

The transport company had said that the sale from April and the start on May 1st would be possible if the last questions were clarified.

In addition to the regionalization law, this also includes the approval of the EU Commission, which is still pending.
