Are we on the way to another wave of price increases - and this time not through the fault of a manufacturer, importer or retailer?

At least according to an urgent appeal sent this morning by the Union of Chambers of Commerce to the Minister of Finance, apparently yes.

An inspection conducted by the Union of Chambers of Commerce shows that in two weeks, on February 15, a jump in the prices of hundreds of imported products, from various fields, is expected.

Including food products, household products, industrial products and even electric scooters.

Among the imported products whose prices are expected to increase: cheeses, vegetables, kitchen utensils, furniture, olive oil, textile products, products in the construction industry, spare parts for cars and more.

Last May,

the Minister of Finance at the time, Avigdor Lieberman,

signed a temporary order to cancel customs duties and purchase taxes on hundreds of different products.

This is in the framework of the program to reduce the cost of living.

Among other things, tariffs of up to 12% were abolished on a series of products such as spare parts for vehicles, construction products such as sinks, toilets and ceramics and various kitchen utensils.

In addition, tariffs on textile products including mattresses and blankets, household furniture and work tools were abolished.

Tariffs on imported food products such as cheese, various vegetables (tomato, cucumber, pepper, celery, carrot and others) and olive oil were also abolished.

From the analysis of the economists of the Association of Chambers of Commerce, based on the Ministry of Finance data, the savings for the public from the elimination of customs duties and purchase taxes amounts to approximately 2 billion per year.

However, the Union of Chambers of Commerce warns today that the curfew will expire in two weeks, and the price of hundreds of products is expected to rise.

in the face of

Uriel Lin, President of the Union of Chambers of Commerce

and

Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich

, calls on Lin to determine the reduction of tariffs and turn the temporary order into a permanent order.

This is with the aim of easing the cost of living and reducing the tax burden on the business sector and the consumer public in Israel.

According to Lin, this move of moving from a temporary order to a standing order has an additional benefit for the business sector: "This move will enable the unification of customs details in a way that will achieve the additional benefit for the economy of lowering the burden of bureaucracy, simplifying imports and reducing unnecessary disputes between customs and importers."
