The French are modifying the composition of their Caddies, but the specter of high consumption is receding

After a decade of price wars in order not to lose their consumers, brands and their suppliers are observing that the French are less inclined to sacrifice their food, even in times of crisis.

While food inflation is approaching 14% over one year in supermarkets (unheard of for forty years), the French are far from emptying their shopping carts.

The volumes of products sold in supermarkets certainly fell by 4.9% and 5.3% during the last two weeks of January.

This is a much higher decline than the 2.2% observed in 2022, according to panelist Iri.

Over the whole month, the withdrawal reached 3.3% according to NielsenIQ.

But there is not enough to trigger a red alert in food factories and the shelves of supermarkets.

The start of 2022 had been very good thanks to consumption at home.

Health constraints and the active circulation of Omicron in France then encouraged the French to stay at home and telecommute.
