A prosperous new year for French banks

ANALYSIS - Last year, they posted profits close to their 2021 records. The outlook is a little less bright for 2023.


The year 2022 will have been a good vintage for French banks.

Despite the war in Ukraine, soaring inflation and the economic slowdown, they have managed, most of the time, to maintain their record profits for 2021. Even to exceed them for BNP Paribas (10.2 billion euros , a record in Europe).

Alone, the result of Societe Generale was divided by almost three (to 2 billion euros).

This is explained by the 3.3 billion euros in charges passed by the bank with the red and black logo to sell its Russian subsidiary Rosbank in a hurry.

In total, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole (8.1 billion euros), Société Générale, BPCE (3.95 billion euros) and Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale (3.5 billion euros) generated a combined 27 .75 billion euros in profits (after 31.7 billion euros in 2021).
