The rise in inflation brings bad news for the Buenos Aires middle class: what that sector consumes is what becomes more expensive

2023-02-09T15:27:03.323Z

Restaurants, hotels, public services, airline tickets, insurance and financial services increased more than goods such as food or fuel.

The

Buenos Aires middle class is feeling the blow of inflation much more

because it is the typical consumption of this sector that is increasing above the average, which was 7.3% in January.

Last month, the prices of

Restaurants and hotels

increased an average of 11.6%, as a result of the increases in the rates of hotel accommodation services for tourist reasons and, to a lesser extent, in the prices of food prepared in restaurants , bars and food houses.

Information and communication

registered a rise of 12.1%, mainly due to the increases in the subscriptions of the

grouped

mobile telephony and communication services.

The

water

service had an increase of 18.7% and the

gas

service  increased 14.6%.

Passenger transport by air,

40.3%;

Tourist packages, 28.8%;

Insurance, 9.1% and Financial Services, 10.1%.

The data is from the Buenos Aires Department of Statistics and Censuses, which had anticipated that inflation last month had been 7.3%.

Now he released the

detail of that

average increase.

Evolution of the prices of goods and services in the City of Buenos Aires in January 2023 (inflation)

The Report indicates that in January Goods registered a rise of 5.2%, below Services, which increased 8.8%.

With the exception of Education (+0.6%) due to the school break, all the chapters had average increases of between 2.3% and 11.6%.

Four sectors had double-digit increases last month.

They were Information and Communication (12.1%), Restaurants and Hotels (11.6%), Transportation (11.1%), and Recreation and Culture (10.6%).

All these increases have

a greater impact on the middle sectors.

What has been happening in recent months is that the prices and fees for services have risen above those for goods.

For example, in December in the City, services increased 6.1% and goods, 5.2%.

Applying the weights, the Buenos Aires index showed an average of 5.8% versus 5.1% of the INDEC at the national level.

A difference of plus or minus 0.7 points.

In January

the gap widened;

services had a rise of 8.8% and goods, 5.2%.

“The monthly dynamics of Goods responded fundamentally to the increases in

food prices

(mainly vegetables, meat, baked goods, fruits and dairy products).

To a lesser extent, the rises in the

values of automobiles

,

personal care products,

books

,

medicines

,

fuel

and lubricants

for vehicles for home use and

clothing stood

out ” , says the report.

“Meanwhile, the behavior of Services mainly reflected the increases in hotel accommodation rates for tourist reasons and in the prices of restaurants, bars and eating houses.

Next in importance were the increases in the values of air tickets and

rentals, along with increases in prepaid medicine quotas

, in subscriptions for mobile telephone service, in the urban bus ticket and in the prices of tour packages.

The rise of 7.3% is the highest level since July of last year, when it reached 7.7%.

Then it went down and both in November and December they marked 5.8%.
