Mexico or the odyssey to rest in the country of vacations

2023-02-11T10:46:41.305Z

The country, a great recipient of tourists, has just raised to 12 days the annual rest time of workers, who only enjoyed 6 since 1970

Mexico is a vacation country, but for others.

Millions of tourists arrive at the many marine and terrestrial paradises while the locals barely enjoy free time.

For half a century the Labor Law that regulated six days off from work a year has not been touched, and when the legislators have started to do so, the employers have protested.

That the accounts were not coming out, they said.

No way: this 2023 has started with good news: workers will have 12 consecutive days of vacation.

It is not to ring the bells, but it is double what they had and one of the policies that the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador is now exhibiting.

With this reform, Mexico is on a par with countries like Vietnam, Argentina or Mozambique.

Among many others, it continues to be surpassed by Tanzania, for example,

which has 20 days of recess established.

The image of the Mexican taking a nap against the wall with his charro hat pulled down could not be more false.

The International Labor Organization recommends 18 days off, but until now that was a chimera for Mexican employees, who are also the ones who spend the most time on paid work in the entire OECD: 2,128 hours a year compared to the average of 1,716 for the rest. of the club

The worker's performance is not, however, reflected in productivity.

From the bars to the museums, it is easy to see legions of hired people that are distributed in any corner without sometimes knowing what they do specifically.

In a closed street where the masons work in a hole, there can be up to six or seven agents, perhaps more, to regulate the little traffic for a few hours.

But that is another story.

Mexican families don't have much time to spend with their children, but politicians ask them to pay more attention to children so they don't wander all afternoon on streets that don't encourage being a little angel.

Each one does what they can to satisfy the demands of the house and the boss, to whom everything seems little.

In this negotiation, which lasted through the last weeks of 2022, the businessmen went to cry to the deputies because it was too long for them to grant 12 days to their employees, like that.

Some legislators listened to business lobbying and offered six consecutive days and the other six distributed the rest of the year, according to the employer, that is, at the feet of the horses.

Finally, the 12 days were left for the worker to dispose of as he wishes.

Half of the population is engaged in informal employment, so the good news is only for the other half.

Those who drag their juice stall, tacos or clothes every morning, will have to follow the usual routine, which is seven days of work in many cases.

In the same way, there are thousands or millions of those who have paid employment, but are forced to complete their weak economy with another day, so that there are these strange hybrids: teacher taxi drivers, police tattoo artists, trade nurses or butcher engineers.

Way to walk, what would the optimist say.

In any case, the workers start a new year thinking about whether those 12 days will be able to share them with the millions of tourists who enjoy palm trees and fine sand on the Caribbean coast or visiting some of the many historical attractions that the North American country offers.

Or everything will remain in an underwater negotiation with the insatiable boss, because Mexico has very advanced legislation on many matters on paper, but day to day is something else.
