The government already recognizes that inflation in January exceeds 5% and prepares the ground for bad news

The Secretary of Industry, Ignacio De Mendiguren, attributed it to record tourism and increases in meat. Consultants expect up to 6% per month.

The Government began to prepare the ground to announce bad news.

This Tuesday the official inflation data for January will be released and all private forecasts indicate that it

will be higher than the 5.1% registered last December.

The consultants estimate it in a range between 5.5 and 6%.

Within this framework, the Secretary of Industry, José Ignacio de Mendiguren, today anticipated a new setback in the measures to stabilize it.

"Yes,

unfortunately we see that the figure (of January inflation) is above that of the previous month, that worries us

," he admitted in dialogue with La García on AM 750 radio.

After falling to 4.9% in November, the CPI rose to 5.1% in December, despite the extension of price agreements.

And now

the consultants surveyed by the Central Bank expect an increase of 5.6% in January

.

They also project inflation of 97.6% for 2023, up from 94.8% in 2022.

De Mendiguren attributed the rise to a

"record" movement of tourism and "seasonal problems."

"Undoubtedly when this happens, prices are abused, the limit is often set by purchasing power, people buy the same despite prices that they cannot validate," he pointed out.

The official recalled that inflation in August was 7.4% and projected in the following 12 months reached 140% annually.

"When we manage to lower it to 5%, that projection drops to 80%, that is the path that we must continue walking," he said in statements to AM 750.

In another radio interview, he pointed to the rise in meat when he pointed out that he had a

"significant delay

" last year, for which reason "almost did not adjust."

The greater cattle slaughter due to the drought in the countryside reduced the cattle stock, which ended up having an impact on cattle prices in recent weeks and on the CPI for January.

Therefore, the Secretary of Commerce, Matías Tombolini, anticipated that the Government is negotiating a new price agreement for meat.

In an interview with Urbana Play, he announced that they will relaunch Cortes Cuidados with cheaper prices for empty meat, matambre, skirt, roasted meat, buttocks and shoulder.

Regarding income, De Mendiguren said that "the problem is that the one who has a job does not have enough money. That reveals us, that is why we seek to lower inflation and, on the other hand, convene parities and the Salary Council", although recognized that

"if the real wage does not recover, there is no sustainable economic model."

"Inflation is the most serious issue, it is the most worrying because it retracts the purchasing power of wages," he said.

On the other hand, the Secretary of Industry came across the statement published last week by Together for Change about an "economic bomb" that the Frente de Todos would leave.

"If there are people who know about bombs, they are those of Together for Change: they did it in 2001 and 2019,"

he shot.

"I am surprised that the UCR supports this 'bomb' thing. They lived through 2001," she added.

Within this framework, he warned that "there are important people who are betting on a sudden devaluation."

"Today, in a country that does not manage to accumulate enough reserves, it is very vulnerable,

any run that four people put together destabilizes

, you have to fight against it. Without reserves and real salary liquefaction, it is a terrible combination, that is why expectations must be discouraged ", he assured.
