The planned warning strike by Ver.di on Friday will have a massive impact on air traffic in Germany. In Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg, among other places, there should be no regular operation. Hundreds of thousands are affected.

Germany's largest airports have reacted to the strike announced by the Ver.di union - and stopped regular operations for passengers on Friday.

The airports in Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stuttgart canceled thousands of passenger flights for the day.

Flight cancellations and other disruptions are also to be expected at some smaller airports.

Airport operators and business associations criticized the actions, which are related to the collective bargaining conflict in the public sector at federal and state level, as disproportionate.

The airport association ADV estimated that more than 295,000 passengers will be affected by the strike.

There is talk of 2,340 failures in domestic and international air traffic.

Passengers should not come to the airport at all

In Frankfurt alone, 1005 flight movements were planned for Friday.

Already on Wednesday there were delays and cancellations for tens of thousands of passengers.

Cable damage at an S-Bahn construction site had led to a failure of Lufthansa's computer systems.

Passengers were asked to transfer to the train.

According to its own statements, Ver.di also wants to strike at the airports in Stuttgart, Bremen, Hanover and Dortmund in addition to the hubs.

Several airports advised passengers not to come to the airport in the first place and to obtain information from the respective airline.

The background to this is the collective bargaining dispute in the public sector, and nationwide collective bargaining for aviation security and a collective bargaining round for ground handling services at some airports.

With the walkout, the employees want to emphasize their demands in the collective bargaining dispute between the federal and local governments.

According to the Frankfurt airport operator Fraport, transfer traffic will also be affected and cannot be processed.

Regular operation will not be possible on Friday because of the warning strike, said a spokeswoman for the Fraport operating company.

Emergency flights are excluded.

According to the operating company, there should be no regular passenger flights at Munich Airport on Friday.

The only exceptions to the cessation of operations are special flights such as relief flights and flights for medical, technical and other emergencies – as well as flights for the Munich Security Conference.

Strike according to Fraport disproportionate

According to Ver.di, the work stoppages on Friday are a combined cross-industry warning strike.

Employees in the public sector take part in it, as do employees in aviation security and ground handling services.

Collective bargaining is currently taking place in parallel at various levels for all three sectors.

Negotiations have been going on in the federal and local public services since January.

Ver.di and the civil servants' association DBB are demanding 10.5 percent more income, but at least 500 euros more for the approximately 2.5 million employees.

The term should be twelve months.

The employers have rejected the claims.

The second round of negotiations is scheduled for February 22nd and 23rd in Potsdam.

Fraport HR manager Julia Kranenberg criticized the announced strike.

"The negotiations are still young - a walkout of this magnitude is completely excessive at this point in time," she said in Frankfurt.

The effects on passengers are "disproportionate".
