After the strike announced by the Ver.di union on Friday, Munich Airport will cease its regular passenger operations.

The airport announced on Wednesday.

Hundreds of flights will be affected - but not the official guests of the Munich Security Conference, which begins on Friday.

Numerous politicians and state guests land in Munich for this purpose.

According to the airport, all special flights are also excluded, including relief flights, flights for medical, technical and other emergencies, such as flights for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.

Authorities exempt airport from operating obligation

"Due to the strike, Flughafen München GmbH has applied to the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport, the supreme aviation authority, to exempt the airport from the obligation to operate commercial air traffic for this day," said the airport's statement.

The request was granted.

Thus, no regular passenger flights should take place from Friday at 00:00 a.m. to Saturday 01:00 a.m.

More than 700 take-offs and landings are planned in Munich on Friday, a spokesman for Germany's second largest airport said at noon.

Nationwide, more than 2000 failures threaten

The Ver.di trade union has called for all-day warning strikes at several German airports on Friday.

In view of the public sector warning strike on Friday, the airport association ADV expects 2,340 cancellations in domestic and international air traffic.

"The fact that more than 295,000 air travelers suffered from the conflict on Friday is unreasonable," said Ralph Beisel, general manager of the ADV.

»Solutions must be found at the negotiating table and not on the backs of the passengers.«

A joint strike by public sector employees, aviation security and ground handling services is planned in Munich, as Ver.di Bayern announced.

The airports in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Hanover and Bremen should also be affected.

The background to this is the collective bargaining dispute in the public sector, and nationwide collective bargaining for aviation security and a collective bargaining round for ground handling services at some airports.

With the walkout, the employees want to emphasize their demands in the collective bargaining dispute between the federal and local governments.

In the negotiations, Ver.di and the civil servants' association DBB are demanding 10.5 percent more income, but at least 500 euros more for the approximately 2.5 million employees.

The term should be twelve months.

The employers have rejected the claims.

The second round of negotiations is scheduled for February 22nd and 23rd in Potsdam.
