At least 7,500 chargers will be open to other brands of electric cars. The lack of terminals is one of the major obstacles to the electric transition in the United States.

Tesla's US network of charging stations will be available to other brands of electric vehicles by the end of 2024, thanks to negotiations between the White House and Elon Musk, the government of Joe Biden announced on Wednesday.

Tesla has agreed to open at least 7,500 chargers to electric cars from other manufacturers, according to a government document detailing its efforts to install some 500,000 more charging stations by 2030.

Relations between the White House and the multi-billionaire have often been stormy, but President Biden's team assured Tuesday that the boss had been responsive when the government asked the main players in the sector to expand their network of charging stations.

7.5 billion dollars for the construction of charging stations in 2021

The lack of chargers is considered a major obstacle to the transition to electric in the United States.

Currently, Tesla owners can purchase adapters to charge their car at other brand stations, but drivers of other electric vehicles cannot.

Tesla's network of "

superchargers

" is one of the reasons that gave the automaker a head start.

Since his arrival at the White House, Joe Biden has initiated several measures intended to promote the development of electric vehicles, such as the 7.5 billion dollars released for the construction of charging stations in 2021. Tesla's decision to allowing other brands to use its terminals with adapters will allow Elon Musk's company to benefit from American subsidies, said the president's team.

The document also mentions commitments made by other companies in favor of charging stations, including Hertz, BP and General Motors.

Government-funded terminals will have to meet several criteria, from reliability to being able to locate them on a smartphone.

Recent studies have shown that many drivers are "
