Tetra Pak: the alliance between food security and ecological transition

2023-03-07T13:48:40.735Z

A company of Swedish origin, established in France for more than 70 years, Tetra Pak is the world leader in food processing and packaging solutions. The group is committed to zero net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the board...

A pioneer in liquid food preservation since the 1950s

Created in 1951, in Sweden, by Dr. Ruben Rausing, the first

Tetra Pak

packaging revolutionized the packaging and storage of milk thanks to its

aseptic multilayer packaging at room temperature,

mainly made of cardboard.

Since 1960, determined to contribute to food safety and availability throughout the world, the brand has been exported on a large scale.

Today,

Tetra Pak

covers 160 countries and has more than 25,000 employees.

Its turnover reached 11.5 billion euros in 2021 thanks to 54 production sites and 6 R&D centers.

The brand has established itself in the agri-food industry, offering three categories of products and solutions: packaging (the famous packaging), processing (product transformation equipment) and services (data analysis and assistance tools ).

In 2021, guided by its desire to “protect what is good”, Tetra Pak produced 192 billion packages worldwide.

A group committed to transforming its industry towards greater sustainability

By their very nature, by limiting food waste through better food preservation, food cartons contribute to a more sustainable food system.

To deal with the ecological and climate emergency, Tetra Pak has also developed a sustainable development strategy taking into account the entire life cycle of the brick: designing bricks that are mainly recyclable, developing responsible sourcing (with cardboard made from of FSC-certified forests and a commitment to introduce more and more recycled plastic), decarbonize production (with an industrial park powered by renewable energies) and invest in the development of collection and recycling infrastructure: 180 million euros invested between 2019 and 2020 out of 500 million euros invested annually in R&

Tetra Pak is committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across all its operations by 2030 and net zero GHG emissions across the entire value chain by 2050, while while maintaining its current food safety and traceability standards.

A major challenge for the coming years: to develop new aluminum-free aseptic barriers that are compatible with recycling channels

The Tetra Pak brick, made up of 70% cardboard on average, is now mostly recyclable and recycled on a large scale in France.

Tetra Pak wants to go even further and is currently working on the development of a first aluminum-free packaging material for aseptic use.

This revolutionary new material would thus be able to facilitate recycling operations and reduce Tetra Pak's overall carbon footprint.

In Japan, after more than 15 months of research involving several million packages, Tetra Pak has successfully completed the first application of an alternative layer to replace aluminum on refrigerated products – a first in the packaging sector. in food cartons.
