How much will Passover cost us? A gap of more than 25% on the same basket - voila! Of money

Just before the madness started, we went out, sampled from the shelves, paid at the cash register and came back with surprising results. Who is the cheapest chain in Israel for Passover?

A moment after we removed the Purim masks and distributed the parcels to each other, we enter the period of increased consumption of the year, at the beginning of April we will celebrate Passover, but the preparations for the holiday, certainly in everything related to the preparation for shopping for frozen and dry food, begin already now.

Add to this the fact that even during Ramadan, even though the Muslim holiday is accompanied by fasting during the day, there is a large increase in food consumption (for the festive meal held every evening) and the fact that Christians also have their Easter (Easter) - and you have a large increase in food sales that does not depend on religion or nationality.

And not only in food: the preparations for Passover are accompanied by a culture of thorough cleaning in homes and even in vehicles.

The origin may be in the pickling of chametz, but this custom too, it turns out, has become the property of all sectors, since a steep increase in sales of cleaning products also exists, for example, in the Arab sector.

But the main thing is of course the delicacies that will be placed on the holiday table - and will also accompany us to the holiday itself and the weekdays of the holiday.

We pay more for the food for the holiday table, not only because of the recent price increase, but mainly due to the fact that many homes throw away or use up the contents of the pantry and refrigerator and restock with kosher products for the holiday.

how much more

According to studies we have conducted in the past, our expenses jump before Pesach by almost 50%!

Where is the cheapest basket?

With all the increased expenses just before the holiday and the preparations, we set out to examine and review where you will find the most profitable basket and where you will pay less and manage to minimize the damage of the holiday.

We surveyed the 9 leading marketing chains in Israel and to see which chain already offers us the most affordable basket for the Passover holiday, we examined in the basket 53 products with a high frequency for the holiday period, starting with fresh meat and poultry, fresh and frozen vegetables and fruits, frozen and fresh fish, canned goods, snacks, sauces, Cooking products and basic products, tea, chocolate spread, Kneidlech and of course cleaning and care products for the home and the body.

The average price of the basket according to the survey we conducted is NIS 1,098 and according to the forecasts the average household will spend about NIS 4,000 for the holiday - which will be divided over a number of purchases and of course - subject to matching the purchase quantities to the persons staying.

The results of the survey were surprising: we found a gap of about 26% between the half-free department store chain and the Freshmarket chain, a significant gap.

The half-free chain presented a basket worth NIS 946 compared to the same basket worth NIS 1,190, a difference of NIS 244.

Even in front of the Shufersal Deal network, the half-free network presents a gap of 23%, which is also expressed in significant savings.

The three leading chains in the survey are half-free, Yohannoff and Rami Levy, which present a basket at a cost less than the general average, compared to the five chains that present a basket at a cost above the national average, the ranking of the locations of the marketing chains is not typical of recent surveys, and we see the Yohannoff chain leaping to second place and the Rami Levy chain (sycamore marketing) , which is often associated with a cheap basket) is relegated to third place.

At the top of the table is, as mentioned, a half-free chain, even though it is a chain that puts the main emphasis on the shopping experience - and not just on the prices.

Shortages for the holiday?

One of the phenomena we foresee this year has already become the norm: the consumer will again have to deal with deficiencies (or reports of deficiencies) that will affect basket prices.

Sources in the market informed us that in the weeks before the holiday we will see shortages in chicken and fresh beef, fresh fish, eggs and milk, so smart and advance buying will help us consume at fair and affordable prices, so as not to be surprised by price increases that will occur due to excess demand in the face of limited supply (whether it is a real or simulated cycle ).
