Are the officials responsible for energy prices in Israel?
At least according to the Chairman of the Economic Committee, MK David Bitan, the answer is yes.
MK Bitan opened the economy committee this morning with what sounded like good news regarding the price of electricity and said: "Following our appeal to the Treasury, regarding the expected 7.5 percent increase in the price of electricity, first of all after my meeting with the Minister of Finance, the entire increase will probably be canceled." MK
Bitan He continued: "Due to the drop in the price of coal, a discount of about 3% is expected, and the Minister of Finance accepted my position that the sale of the power plant will benefit the price reduction."
However, with all due respect to the Minister of Finance, he is not the one who can determine the price of electricity, therefore the chairman of the committee also identified the problem: not the global crisis that led to a global increase in energy prices, nor the delay in converting the coal stations to natural gas, as stated by the State Comptroller, but - According to MK Bitan, the officials are again guilty:
"The problem is that the head of the Electricity Authority is not ready to accept the state's position, that it will guarantee to make up the gap in the sale price of the power plant, if there is one at all. This seems excessive to me, it is a sale that will take place in six months and it is clear that it will cover the difference."
