Is beet immune to jaundice in northern France?

THE VERIFICATION - Several voices claim that the ban on neonicotinoid insecticides will be less harmful to beet farms in Hauts-de-France, "less prone to jaundice". Is this reality?


Almost two months after the shock wave created by the decision of the Court of Justice of the EU to prohibit derogations from the use of neonicotinoids (NNI) in the Community space, the pressure does not fall in the France, Europe's leading producer of beet sugar.

While the sowing of beets has started in our borders, the whole sector thus fears the possible consequences of an epidemic of jaundice - against which the NNI protects - on the yields of this flagship crop of the French farm.

Thus in 2020, the last year in which some 23,500 French planters had not been able to use these insecticides banned since 2018, a violent attack by this disease carried by aphids had caused the harvest to drop by 35%.

And more than 70% in some areas.

Impossible at this stage to say if this dark scenario will repeat itself.

But already, this uncertain health context is shaking the entire sector.
