Cars: there are waiting lists that go up to 2024 and some brands already operate only in dollar bills

2023-03-26T23:48:14.984Z

Toyota models such as the Corolla Cross and the SW4 are available at list price with delays of ten months to a year. For immediate delivery, the portals ask for surcharges of 35%.

The clamp on imports is generating distortions that were unprecedented, even until recently, within car dealerships.

Some Toyota brand models

are no longer available for this year : you have to sit and wait until 2024 to get a unit of

Corolla Cross, Hilux SW4 or Yaris

at the list price .

Of course, there is a market for "immediate delivery" zero kilometer units, which are more expensive: approximately 35% above the list price, if the offers published on the Mercado Libre portal are used as a reference: a Corolla Cross from

11.3 million pesos

is sold for $39,500, equivalent to

$15.3 million

.

But if the eventual buyer of some of these models is not willing to endorse price premiums of

four million pesos or even more

, then they must resign themselves to paying a down payment and entering a waiting list, with an "open price", whose delay has already exceeded. the remaining nine months or so of this year.

"Something is happening with our brand that we do not see in other dealerships, because we continue with sustained demand, and supply difficulties,"

a Toyota dealer from Buenos Aires told

Clarín .

"80% of local production is exported to all of Latin America and we

are captive customers of Toyota Argentina

, which obsessively takes care

that Toyota of Thailand does not sell Hilux or SW4 in these parts

," he added.

Toyota manufactures in Argentina the

Hilux

pick up and its "suv" version, the

SW4

.

Models like the

Corolla, Corolla Cross, Etios and Yaris

are

imported

from Brazil.

"At the same time, the vehicles that come from Brazil arrive in quotas established by the Government, which, due to the lack of dollars, restricts the SIRA," added the dealer.

Other models that came from outside the area, such as the RAV4, Land Cruiser or Camry directly stopped importing them.

"You had to wait a year to have the dollars to pay them and the risk of being barefoot in the event of an eventual disclosure of the exchange rate was very great," added the Buenos Aires dealer.

Conclusion?

"We have more than one model

whose delivery we cannot commit until 2024

, such as the Corolla Cross, Yaris and the Hilux SW4."

The case of Toyota is not repeated in other brands of the so-called "generalists" such as

Fiat, Peugeot, Chevrolet or Volkswagen

, which have locally produced models whose delivery takes place, in some cases, in a matter of

a few weeks.

The Fiat Cronos and the Peugeot 208 have been the best-selling models at zero kilometers for more than a year, largely because

there is enough supply.

These are models produced in the country and, in general, automotive terminals

today do not have restrictions for the entry of auto parts,

according to the owner of one of the most selling automotive companies

"We are delivering the Fiat Cronos and Peugeot 208

in three weeks

, without surcharges. On the other hand, the models imported from Brazil, such as the Fiat Toro pick-up, take longer," said the manager of a Buenos Aires dealership.

Automotive companies with a factory in the country, grouped in the Association of Automotive Manufacturers (ADEFA) today concentrate

practically all

the cars sold in Argentina: over 400,000 zero kilometers that were sold last year, brands that do not belong to ADEFA and which are grouped in the CIDOA chamber,

barely sold 5,000 units

, 1.25% of the total.

Within this restricted quota of imported cars, many of them

high-end

, what circulates directly is the

dollar bill

.

One of the brands that makes up CIDOA no longer uses pesos to pay for the vehicles that are allowed to import from the Ministry of Commerce, which is the body in charge of granting permits for the Import System (SIRA).

"

We take the dollars from our customers and pay the brand

, so we don't have to wait 180 days for the Central Bank to authorize us to buy dollars. That

forces us to compete with a dollar of 389 pesos, instead of the other brands that operate with a dollar of 212 pesos

, of course," explained the owner of the brand, of Asian origin.

Hugo Belcastro

, head of CIDOA, said for his part that trademarks must go through three instances: in addition to the SIRA and the 180-day term imposed by the Central Bank, they must have the procedure called the Financial Economic Coefficient (CEF)

,

which elaborates the AFIP.

"All CIDOA brands

 were able to enter vehicles

. But apart from some delays in the SIRAs, a new restriction also influenced, the CEF, which according to certain AFIP criteria

allows or does not allow you to load SIRAs

, "explained Belcastro, who He expressed the annoyance that the new procedure generated among the importers, whose market share is now at a historical level.

"With these issues

it becomes more difficult to schedule productions

. For now we can continue operating," said the businessman.
