Sexuality of seniors: a survey carried out by Ifop thwarts received ideas

Conducted on a sample of 3,000 people in January, this new survey deconstructs all the clichés. Thus, the seniors have, it seems, not said goodbye to their sex life, which would have even become much more fulfilling.

Can you have a fulfilling sex life past the 50-year mark?

According to the new Ifop study, carried out last January with the DisonsDemain dating site, it would seem that the answer is yes.

Distributed to 3,000 people, the survey reveals that 39% of 50-69 year olds are sexually active - a narrow gap with 18-24 year olds who are only 42%.

Far from having drawn a line under their desires, this last category of people would even claim to feel much freer today than when they were 20 years old.

Sex toys and dating apps

In the age of social networks, more and more seniors are using apps to meet new people more easily.

“The proportion of single people (

over 50, editor’s note

) who could register on dating apps has doubled in 20 years, from 18% in 2004 to 39% in 2023.”

Nearly half of those who responded to the survey also say they use sex toys during their relationships.

And while more and more women now think that it is "possible to have a sex life without loving", the youngest seem less interested in this idea: "Contrary to certain clichés, this It is not in the ranks of GenZ that we find the most sexually active single people,” the study notes.

Progress in Sweden

This new survey thus intends to raise awareness about the sexuality of the elderly, a subject still very taboo in France, even though another study reported in 2014 that 10% of residents of retirement homes were sexually active.

By dint of documentaries and articles, the public authorities are nevertheless beginning to take hold of the subject.

The "national sexual health strategy" launched in March 2017 with a horizon of 2030, has thus set itself the task of taking better account of their sexuality.

Some hope for this initiatives like Sweden, which offers discussions on intimacy and desire in retirement homes.

That of the village of Broby, in the county of Scania, has recently offered “pleasure baskets”, made available to residents.

Inside: lubricants, sex toys and condoms.
