Rafael defeated the aerospace industry: Finland will purchase the David slingshot system to intercept missiles and drones, in a tender that was accelerated due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Just before the security tensions in the south and the north, a moment of coolness for the defense industry in Israel: Finland will be the first foreign customer of the David sling system manufactured by Rafael.

Finnish Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen said that the system will allow the Finns to intercept targets at high altitude, as part of strengthening its air defense capabilities.

The value of the deal may exceed half a billion euros: the first phase is worth 316 million euros, and the Finns have options to expand the deal by another 216 million euros.

The deal was accelerated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the Russians' widespread use of cruise missiles against Ukrainian targets.

Last week, Finland officially joined NATO, and Russia threatened that the move would not go without a response.

David's sling, formerly called a magic wand, was developed and manufactured by Rafael and its American partner Raytheon.

In Israel, the system is part of the national defense system against missiles, rockets, airplanes and drones. The Iron Dome, also made by Rafael, is the lowest layer, a David slingshot is located above it, before the Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 produced by the Aerospace Industry. The system's unique

interceptor It is two-stage: a rocket booster brings it to a high initial speed, then the missile engine itself is ignited, which targets its target using a unique combination of radar and an optical sensor, and hits it directly.

The David slingshot is designed to intercept missiles and heavy rockets at a range of about 40 to 300 km.

Hopes to be the new locomotive, in the shadow of the consequences of the legislation

Rafael competed for the deal with the Aerospace Industry, which offered the Finns the Barak-8 MX system produced by it.

The Barak 8 system, which was developed together with India, has already been sold to the Israeli Navy, the Indian Air, Sea and Land Forces, Morocco and, according to foreign sources, also to Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates.

Despite this, Israel Aerospace Industries will also benefit from the David Slingshot deal, as the system radar supplier, and also Elbit, which produces its command and control system. Finland has become a

significant customer of Israel's defense industries in recent years. It was the first foreign customer of the Gabriel-5 naval missile from Israel Aerospace Industries In a $200 million deal, Rafael purchased Spike anti-tank missiles for $224 million and Malabit rockets for $70 million.

The Finnish announcement comes two days after Elbit announced to the stock exchange that it had won a $280 million contract to a European country for precision weaponry, electronic warfare systems, surveillance systems, intelligence gathering and maintenance services.

With the beginning of the crisis in the capital markets around the world, at the same time as the increase in the defense spending of countries that avoided it for years, mainly throughout Europe and Asia, many estimated that defense exports from Israel would increase greatly - and even replace high-tech as the growth engine of the economy.

However, the last two huge deals come after more than a year of discussions and experiments, and do not reflect the damage that is already felt in Israeli defense exports following the world's fear of a change in Israel's character if the legal revolution legislation is completed.
