Baby boom: how much do baby products cost us and where will we pay less? - Walla! Of money

Baby products, from cribs and strollers to milk substitutes, are a significant expense. We went to check how much they would cost us, and in the city: where we will pay less for food, diapers and wipes

Our baby: there is no limit to how much we would be willing to spend on him, especially if it is the first child.

The State of Israel is celebrating 75 years and currently has close to 10 million inhabitants.

If we go back 75 years to the day of the announcement by God in Iyer 1948, we will find that we began the journey with 650,000 residents, who came here to establish the Land of Israel.

Although the population throughout the world has increased in the last 75 years, if we look at the countries that make up Israel's reference group , we will find that one of the areas in which we "excel" is the natural increase. Not only the large waves of immigration - from the 1950s to the present, are the ones that fed our population register, but also an unusual natural increase in the terms of Western countries. If we examine the last year we will find that in

2022 The country's population grew by 2.2%, with only 20% of the total growth coming from immigration and immigration to Israel (even after 75 years, the immigration does not stop!) 73.60% of all residents in the State of Israel are Jews and 21.10% are Arabs and 5.30% are Christians or an unclassified population religion.

In that year, about 178,000 babies were born in Israel.

About five percent of the total population in Israel belongs to the ages of babies and toddlers up to the age of 3.

"Children are joy" goes the song of the band Natural Selection (which actually looked critically at the issue of the number of children, but we will leave this discussion to the literature section), but this joy has considerable costs : Starting from the pre-natal stage until achieving the basic needs that every baby needs.

When we refer to babies we have the care accessories used for basic needs such as food and care products such as diapers, wipes and creams.

In this area we know the high prices and hardships they produce, but at least this phenomenon is not exclusive to Israel.

All over the world, the prices of baby food, which are just as important as essential medicines, have risen greatly.

Despite the recommendation of the health organizations to breastfeed, close to half of the women will gradually incorporate breast milk substitutes into breastfeeding.

One should differentiate between one-time expenses such as a bed and stroller, and current expenses such as breast milk substitutes (Photo: ShutterStock)

What do you buy before giving birth?

With the beginning of pregnancy, we prepare for the baby's arrival in three different areas:

Preparing the living environment

Purchasing products for moving around and living outside the home

Products for daily living, food, care and health aids.

We usually make the preparations for planning the living environment before the birth, if it is a first baby, not only do we need a large number of items, but we usually also have no idea about the real needs: what should be prepared when the offspring arrives home, what can be purchased later - and above all - what can you give up?

Only with experience comes the savings and use of products that pass from brother to sister (or vice versa).

With the food and care products, we usually wait until after the birth to get a recommendation from the medical team or use coupons that we kept in our wallet.

It turns out that young couples find considerable sums for the design and planning of the living environment right with the results of the ultrasound to identify the sex of the newborn. Home styling, a tour of showrooms and choosing collections, accessories, which stroller the friends' baby has and which brand is the most desired in the public garden today.

It turns out that our decisions regarding our babies do not work and are made like most normative buying decisions:

if we refer to the physiological needs of the baby, a bed for NIS 300 and a stroller for NIS 500 will be enough for us, a bodysuit from the clothing hangar, wet wipes for NIS 1.90 and of course theoretically The baby can be breastfed until the age of five... but in practice most of the decision-making for a baby who cannot intervene and express an opinion is still involved in the need for social evaluation, a desire to give him the best and sometimes also to give the children what we might not have had.

Sima David, CEO of the HGM interior design and planning company

: "Many parents invest considerable sums in the planning and design of the baby's rooms and do not compromise in relation to the rest of the home's spaces, the enthusiasm and anticipation also leads the grandparents to be part of the planning process and invest, so the budget is larger." David

adds : "The design of the babies' living space has great meaning and not only for the purpose of wanting to impress the environment because the baby does not differentiate between Gucci and Freda, but in the choice of colors, and the types and lighting fixtures.

For example, we will not use blinding or heat-emitting lighting, but warm and soft lighting with intensity control that will be suitable for all hours of the day.

This is how the use of smart home elements in baby rooms has become common: from temperature control, lighting, media, music and online photo systems to the unlimited furniture solutions.

Most parents advocate the purchase of beds with a safety standard from one of the well-known companies and not self-production, this is different from wardrobes and changing rooms." And what is the

budget for all of this? "The investment in the design and construction of children's rooms today ranges from 50,000 to 500,000 shekels... depending on the status and ability of the parents, It is also possible to plan and design rooms at lower costs and with excellent results, although even the most basic furniture has significant costs."

For this reason, the prices of baby strollers sometimes reach up to NIS 30,000 - and this is not an autonomous stroller, but a preference for a desirable brand and model, when in the conversation between parents and babies we recognize that the brand is not enough, but also the yearbook.

In Israel, there are a number of chains and sales sites for the sale of baby furniture and accessories. The leading marketing chains in the field in Israel are the long-established Shilv chain, Motzitzim, Baby Star, Tzuzik, Toyland, Bebebot this is us, Eglis and other private stores, some of which have become mini-malls for baby products.

And what do you buy regularly?

We have put together a basket of baby products whose items we purchase mainly in the marketing and pharmacy chains: food, diapers, wipes and care products.

We examined ten marketing chains, three of which were Pharm chains and we discovered that purchasing in the dedicated chains has a significant premium on the price.

The Rami Levy network and the Osher network occupy the first place (a difference of 0.70 aj) and the gap with the most expensive network in the sample, the BE network, is 28%.

The three pharma chains present the most expensive baskets in the baby products survey.

The price differences between the dedicated marketing chains for babies can be huge, especially if we don't have the knowledge as to what we really need to purchase.

It is possible that on the bed there will be gaps of 10% between the different networks and the same gap on the cart.

Therefore, it is better to remember that the complete birth package consists of a large number of items that differ between different brands and products, which are not immediately necessary to purchase, or at least can be split up.

Splitting the purchase can lead us to save more than 25% of all expenses!
