'Without price list or merchandise': the other side of the dollar crisis

2023-04-24T22:18:14.243Z

Many suppliers postpone deliveries due to uncertainty. Electronics, motorcycles and travel agencies, the most complicated items.

The high volatility in the exchange market accentuated the difficulties in many areas.

Chains, distributors, manufacturers and builders warn that

their suppliers limit the delivery of merchandise or do not do so

due to the lack of certainty regarding the value of the dollar.

"I have no price" or "later I'll send you the new list"

are the excuses most heard these days, according to business sources.

This erratic dynamic has an impact above all on products that are highly dependent on imports, such as

electronics, construction materials, motorcycles, bicycles, tires, some textiles, and even toys

.

Two chains, one specializing in household appliances and a supermarket, confirmed to

Clarín

that their suppliers "comply only with previously committed orders, but refuse to take new ones because they say they are priceless."

The dollar crisis worsened the outlook, which was already complicated by the tightening of the stocks on imports.

In April,

the blue already accumulates a rise of 17.5%

: this Monday it rose another $20 and closed at $462, a new nominal record.

Added to this is the prior requirements for importers to postpone payments abroad.

"

There is no supplier that sells you at 180 days

. And what is the high-end, there is a very important shortage and the situation is very complicated", lamented a tire distributor.

Tourism companies also reacted to the rise in the dollar.

From Despegar they avoided the sharp definitions.

They indicated that they operate normally and that although they invoice in pesos,

they apply the tourist dollar price

($452) in the price of international trips.

The Logan agency, for its part, communicated through social networks that "for the moment, and until further notice,

we will only accept payments in dollars

for terrestrial services abroad."

The sources describe very common practices in contexts of high uncertainty.

A motorcycle brand pointed out that sales were coming at a good pace in the first quarter of the year.

However, he stresses that the trend changed abruptly from April on.

"

Since then we have no prices

. And the prices that exist

reflect the jump in the dollar, the stocks and the postponement of payments abroad

," said an executive from the sector.

There are multiple doubts, because "if you obtain the permit to import, you can only access the MULC (reserve dollars) between 90 and 120 days later. Therefore, you have to put together the cost structure for 3 or 4 months from now , and all in the middle of a currency run", he reasoned.

Dealers price according to segment.

In the cheapest units, they are sold in pesos under the umbrella of Fair Prices (limit of 3.2% monthly increases).

In the mid-range "they are self-regulated", that is, they are sold in pesos but depending on the price of financial dollars, or the parallel.

"

In the high range they only accept dollar bills

", they graph.

With bicycles (built to a large extent with imported components) similar things happen.

"Since the middle of last year, authorizations have been coming very slowly, but in this storm we are tightening the conditions to sell. When we do so,

we take an intermediate exchange rate between the official and the blue as a reference

. This is around $ 350", detailed a distributor in the sector.

In construction, and as happens every time the dollar soars, "corralones, large suppliers of materials, enclosures, and carpentry stop selling because they don't know the replacement cost," explained a real estate developer.

As he said, this has been happening for at least 8 months, and "

asking for a budget for a small work is a real nightmare

."

However, he clarified that the biggest difficulties are for small builders.

"The big ones have a back to collect merchandise," he said.
