Notice to procrastinators: don't miss the deadline to complete your tax return. For taxpayers eligible for the automatic declaration – they were 10.8 million last year – they will only have to check the information known to the administration and, even without action on their part, it will be validated by the deadline.

For others, while the task may seem tedious, the Directorate General of Public Finance leaves time to fulfill its obligations. Between six and eight weeks for online reporting depending on where you live. Thus, the inhabitants of departments 1 (Ain) to 19 (Corrèze) or abroad have until May 25 at midnight, those of departments 20 (Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud) to 54 (Meurthe-et-Moselle) until June 1 and finally all the others, from department 55 (Meuse) to the Overseas before June 8.

For paper filers (those who do not have access to the internet or do not feel able to report online), the deadline is May 22.

Beyond that, your situation becomes more difficult. "There are two scenarios," says Virginie Roitman, president of the Ordre des experts-comptables Paris-Ile-de-France. Either you are in good faith, because of an oversight, an error, an illness ... And the tax authorities will be conciliatory, either you are in bad faith and the failure to declare can then cost you dearly. »

Surcharge and default interest

Your tax will then be increased by 10% if you finally complete your tax return in the absence of a formal notice, 20% within 30 days of the formal notice and 40% if the return has not been filed within 30 days of receipt of the formal notice. And if the tax authorities discover that you are engaged in a hidden activity, an 80% surcharge will be applied to you. All this without counting late interest, "0.20% of the tax due per month of delay or 2.4% per year," says Virginie Roitman.

If you are one of the latecomers, you will be able to complete your declaration online until June 30, when the online platform closes. Beyond that, it will be necessary to go through the paper form.

As part of the Allô impôt operation, the Order of Chartered Accountants answers your questions free of charge at 0.800.065.432 from 22 to 26 May from 9 a.m. to 18 p.m. (and until 21 p.m. on May 23 and 25).
