The turnover of gambling reached in France the record sum of 12.9 billion euros in 2022, an increase of 20% over one year, driven by casinos, according to data published Thursday by the National Gaming Authority (ANJ).
While operators holding exclusive rights (Française des Jeux and PMU) still represent more than half of the activity, with 64% of gross gaming revenue (GVP) with €8.2 billion in 2022 (+8% compared to 2021), casinos have experienced a 130% growth in turnover.
Record bets for online sports betting
This "is largely explained by the total reopening of casinos after two years of reduced activity due to the pandemic," says the National Gaming Authority (ANJ), while the sector has returned to its pre-crisis level, with 2.5 billion euros last year, against 2.4 billion in 2019.
Online gambling, on the other hand, slowed down with growth of 0.8%, to 2.2 billion euros, "after experiencing strong growth between 2017 and 2021 with an average annual growth rate of the PBJ of 18%", recalls the ANJ. However, online sports betting recorded a record level of bets thanks to the World Cup, at 1.4 billion euros (+2.5% compared to 2021).
