Women continue to be the most affected by this phenomenon: the female unemployment rate is 1.7 times higher than that of their male peers. Women account for 62 per cent of the unemployed population and 55.1 per centof the underemployed population. The activity rate is sustained and the employment rate is increasing.

It arises from the data of the Buenos Aires Statistics Directorate. Correspond to the first quarter 2023

Porteños with jobs reached a new record, but with lower quality jobs, greater precariousness and greater informality.

It is that according to data from the Buenos Aires Directorate of Statistics and Censuses for the first quarter of this year, among the employed, the number of wage earners decreased, who in turn in greater proportion work in informality that is also a record for the series of the first quarters. And there are more self-employed or "invoicers" at levels also unprecedented.

From the Report of the Buenos Aires Directorate it emerges that:

• The employed population living in the City of Buenos Aires totals 1,590,500 people. It represents an employment rate of 59.3% "and becomes the highest in the series",.. "In the last year, the relative year-on-year increase amounts to 2.4% and 37,000 people were incorporated into the occupation."

• By type of work, "72.8% work as salaried workers, 3.3 points lower than the previous year. This percentage includes about 1,157,500 people." There are 24,300 fewer wage earners than a year ago.

• The fall in the volume of the salaried population in the context of employment expansion has as a counterpart the increase in the population that works on its own, which again reaches the highest value of the historical series that begins eight years ago.

• In turn, the salaried population to which their employer does not give a retirement discount is 27.4%, which means that a little more than 1 in 4 employees is deprived of rights from work. This is the highest record in the series for the first quarters of the year. A year ago it was 26.5%.

• 11.1% of the salaried population (excluding domestic service) is subject to temporary employment, therefore registers employment relationships based on fixed-term contracts. This type of employment is one of the dimensions of "atypical employment" and affects 121,500 people.

• The activity rate is sustained and the employment rate is increasing, which translates into a reduction in the unemployment rate to 6.4%. This is the lowest figure in the series, 4.3 points lower than in the same quarter of 2019, in the pre-pandemic period (10.7%). In the South, the unemployment rate is 11%.

• Unemployment involves some 109,000 people. Women continue to be the most affected by this phenomenon: the female unemployment rate is 1.7 times higher than that of their male peers.

Women account for 62 per cent of the unemployed population and 55.1 per cent of the underemployed population. A year earlier, female participation in unemployment was lower (54.8%) but slightly higher in underemployment (56.3%).
