Insurance contracts: "three-click" termination comes into effect (but is not yet in place)

2023-06-01T14:21:58.289Z

Highlights: As of June 1, 2023, you must have the option to cancel your home, automobile or health insurance contract on your own. "More flexibility" is the government's objective to simplify your administrative procedures online. Companies that do not comply with this obligation may be fined up to €75,000. If one of the main insurers mentioned "a technical problem", another tells us that it is not aware of this change. The functionality, currently only imposed on the insurance sector, should be extended by decree to new services in the coming months.

"More flexibility". This is the government's objective to simplify your administrative procedures online. And from this Thursday, June 1, this is supposed to become very concrete. You can cancel your insurance contracts (home, car, health...) in just three clicks. The decree published on June 1 sets "the technical modalities to make it as simple as possible for the consumer".

So, to overcome this termination, and avoid complex cancellation requests by registered mail or telephone, simply log on to your insurance website. If it has made the necessary changes, when you consult your contract, it must appear "an identifiable, easy to access, direct and permanent feature" to terminate it.

In the same way that it is often very simple to subscribe to an offer, the possibility of cancellation will now also be so.

This new procedure applies to future contracts but also to those already signed, even if they were signed in store. "In the same way that it is often very simple to subscribe to an offer, the possibility of termination will now also be," promises this Thursday Olivia Grégoire, the minister delegate in charge of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Trade, Crafts and Tourism.

In most cases, a "terminate your contract" button will be present on your web page. It will be enough to make the first click on it. Then, a second page should open to fill in several information (surname, first name, means of contact, the reference of the contract ...) and in particular the why and how of your termination, before validating. This is the second click. Finally, you will be asked for a final click after reading the general summary of conditions and consequences, to "confirm your termination request". And that's it!

€75,000 fine for non-compliance

Except that few insurers or banks have updated or prepared their platforms for D-Day. So do not worry, if you do not find the first button, it is because your insurance has not yet done its part of the job to offer this termination "in three clicks" on its various media, despite a text voted on August 16, 2022. If one of the main insurers mentioned "a technical problem", another tells us that it is not aware of this change.

"The information didn't get to us at all. I bring it up as soon as possible but currently this feature is not available from us, "replied a customer service. Companies that do not comply with this obligation may be fined up to €75,000.

This functionality, currently only imposed on the insurance sector, should be extended by decree to new services in the coming months. This would concern energy contracts (electricity, gas, etc.) and telecoms contracts (telephony, boxes, etc.).
