Work experience: the three sectors that most hire young people for their first job

Highlights: Argentina is one of the countries where people start working at an earlier age. The three sectors in which Argentine talents work for the first time are: commercial, sales and business, followed by administration, accounting and finance with 9%. And finally gastronomy and tourism with 8%, according to the Bumeran survey. Of the 67% of Argentines who studied while working, 72% did so in an area other than their studies, while only 28% were able to work in a job related to their career.


According to a survey by Bumeran, Argentina is one of the countries where people start working at an earlier age.


The three sectors in which Argentine talents work for the first time are: commercial, sales and business, with 22%. It is followed by administration, accounting and finance with 9%. And finally gastronomy and tourism with 8%, according to the Bumeran survey First job.

According to the report carried out by the job search company, the most common sectors in a first work experience are: internships in banks, employees for shops and sellers, for the area of Commercial, Sales and Business; audit assistants, administrative or accounting employees, for the Administration, Accounting and Finance sector, and kitchen assistants, cafeteria employees and waiters, are examples of the Gastronomy and Tourism sector.

But what are the less common areas in a first work experience? Customs and Foreign Trade with 0.15% with available positions in Bumeran of operator or administrative of foreign trade, for example; Arts with 0.21% and Insurance with 0.31%, with positions of issuer or commercial executive.

First job is a study by Bumeran in which 11,878 talents from the region participated: 2,436 from Argentina, 2,312 from Chile, 3,182 from Ecuador, 1,567 from Panama and 2,381 from Peru. It explores what the first work experience of working people was like.

"Argentina is one of the countries where people start working at an earlier age. Undoubtedly, the search for the first job is driven by a need to become economically independent and, in turn, by the desire to start gaining experience", explains Federico Barni, CEO of Jobint.

Busiest sectors

But what are the less common areas in a first work experience? Customs and Foreign Trade with 0.15% with available positions in Bumeran of operator or administrative of foreign trade, for example; Arts with 0.21% and Insurance with 0.31%, with positions of issuer or commercial executive.

However, the most common sectors are not the same if a distinction is made by gender: women had their first job mostly in the areas of Commercial, Sales and Business, in 27%; Customer Service, Call Center and Telemarketing, by 12%; and Administration, Accounting and Finance, by 10%. While the majority of men worked for the first time in areas of Commercial, Sales and Business, in 16%; Production and Manufacturing, by 12%; and in Trades by another 12%.

Like women, people of other gender identities or who prefer not to say it had their first job mostly in the areas of Commercial, Sales and Business, in 17%; Customer Service, Call Center and Telemarketing, by 9%; and Administration, Accounting and Finance, by 11%.

72% of workers in Argentina had their first job in an area other than the career they were studying. 67% of Argentine talents were studying when they had the opportunity to get a job for the first time, compared to 33% who only worked. Of the 67% of Argentines who studied while working, 72% did so in an area other than their studies, while only 28% were able to work for the first time in a job related to their career.

Of the 28% of Argentine talents who had the opportunity to work for the first time in a sector related to their career, most of them were studying Economics, Finance or Business Administration, in 23%; Engineering, by 13% and Medicine, Nursing or Pharmacology, by 8%. While the minority was studying Tourism, by 1%; Sociology or Social Work, in another 1%; and Psychology or Psychopedagogy, by 2%.

At what age did the talents of Argentina have their first job?

49% responded between the ages of 18 and 20, 27% before the age of 18, 18% between the ages of 21 and 25, 4% between the ages of 26 and 30, 2% between the ages of 31 and 35, 0.36% after the age of 40, and 0.15% between the ages of 36 and 40.

About the reasons why they started working, 26% said it was because they needed money, 25% because they wanted to have a job and study at the same time, 24% to have economic independence, 15% to gain experience, 4% to put their knowledge into practice, another 4% to practice their profession and 2% because their family suggested it.

What happens in the other countries of the region?

Only Argentines and Chileans mostly assured that they began to work out of economic necessity. Ecuadorians and Peruvians did it by choice, as they sought to gain experience, while Panamanians did so because they wanted to study and work together.

Regarding the modality of hiring their first work experience, 71% of them were in a dependency relationship, 26% informally and 3% were freelance.

In addition, 38% of Argentina's talents worked more than 30 hours per week in their first job, 33% less than 10 hours per week, 17% between 10 and 20 hours and 12% between 20 and 30 hours.

However, the number of hours worked is not the same for all Argentine talents: most women worked for the first time less than 10 hours per week, unlike men whose jobs demanded more than 30 hours per week.
