Wind power: TotalEnergies signs a major electricity contract in Kazakhstan

Mirny, which will include about 200 wind turbines, is the largest wind energy initiative in Kazakhstan and is to contribute to the Kazakh government's goal of producing 15% from renewable sources by 2030.

TotalEnergies announced on Friday the signing of a 25-year power purchase agreement in Kazakhstan, as part of the gigantic "Mirny" wind project representing an investment of $ 1.4 billion. Located in the Zhambyl region (southern Kazakhstan), the project provides for the construction of a 1 GW onshore wind farm associated with 600 MWh battery energy storage to ensure "a reliable power supply," TotalEnergies said in a statement.

A project that will feed 1 million people

This project represents an important step in TotalEnergies' multi-energy strategy," said Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of the French group. The electricity produced by the Mirny project will be sold in its entirety to the state of Kazakhstan to supply the national grid and will power one million people, he added. The company will develop the Mirny project in partnership with the National Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna and the National Company KazMunayGas, which will each hold a 20% stake in the project.

This winter, TotalEnergies announced the sale for $ 330 million of its subsidiary operating the Dunga oil field in western Kazakhstan, as well as the signing of the future wind project in this Central Asian country. TotalEnergies already has two operational solar power plants in Kazakhstan with a capacity of 128 MW.
