The mirage of the cheap European electric car

25.000? 20.000? How much will it be necessary to go down so that the electric car can be within reach of the middle class lost sight of manufacturers in recent years? Less than 25,000 euros is the amount promised by Citroën for its ë-C3 marketed in early 2024, and by Volkswagen with its ID2 scheduled for 2025. Less than 20,000 euros, this is the goal in an indefinite future by the bosses of VW and Renault for future models.

But already, the Losange has reviewed... upwards its range for the electric R5, although no specific amount has yet been disclosed. Interviewed at the end of August by the German newspaper Autogazette, Fabrice Cambolive, the boss of the brand, no longer said "less than 25,000 euros": "We are working hard so that the R5 is marketed at a price below 30,000 euros. In this way, we want to demonstrate our competitiveness, especially in the field of small electric cars.
