Income tax: the rest to be paid deducted from Monday

2023-09-24T10:48:58.692Z

Highlights: Around 9.6 million taxpayers still owe money to the tax authorities, for an average amount of almost 2,300 euros. The amount due will be deducted in one go this Monday, September 25 if it is less than or equal to 300 euros. If your debt is higher, the sum will be withdrawn in four instalments of the same amount, with a first maturity from this September 25 and three others on October 26, November 27 and December 27. The Directorate-General for Public Finances recommends declaring any change in situation that could have an impact on your withholding tax rate.

The first concerned have known since the middle of the summer with the receipt of their tax notice. And, in these first days of autumn, they begin to pay their debt to the tax authorities. Following the 2022 tax return and the final calculation, some 9.6 million taxpayers owe the astronomical sum of 21.7 billion euros to the Treasury. That is an average of 2,259 euros precisely per household concerned.

How can this be explained? This situation occurs when the amount deducted at source from the income of the year 2022 has not been sufficient to cover all the tax due, in particular due to a significant increase in income. It can also happen when the advance of reduction or tax credits collected in January 2023 was too large.

If you are one of the taxpayers concerned, the amount due will be deducted in one go this Monday, September 25 if it is less than or equal to 300 euros. If your debt is higher, the sum will be withdrawn in four instalments of the same amount, with a first maturity from this September 25 and three others on October 26, November 27 and December 27.

Life changes to be declared as soon as possible

On your bank account, the debit will be indicated by its origin, "DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF PUBLIC FINANCES", and by its wording, "INCOME TAX BALANCE 2022", followed by the invoice number.

Conversely, about 15.6 million taxpayers had received a refund of 844 euros on 24 July or 2 August, because, this time, the withholding tax made in 2022 had proved too large. The particularly high number of people concerned this year is explained by the revaluation of the income tax scale, by 5.4%, faster for some than the evolution of their income.

In order to avoid as much as possible having a balance to pay next year, or at least to reduce its magnitude as much as possible, the Directorate-General for Public Finances (DGFiP) recommends declaring as soon as possible any change in situation that could have an impact on your withholding tax rate. It can be a change in family situation (marriage, birth, etc.) or in professional life that impacts income (promotion, retirement, etc.). The change can be made at any time online with the "manage my withholding tax" service on Impots.gouv.fr or at your public finance centre.
