Since the horrific massacre on October 7, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been searching for a lifeline to break out of the abyss into which Yahya Sinwar pushed him. Today he was presented with this rope: the resumption of trial in the thousands of cases.

The insistence on holding the hearings on Netanyahu's files, at the moment, while fighting, plays into the hands of the good old narrative, which has served him faithfully for 15 years – they persecute me, do me an injustice, deal with trifles instead of dealing with the things that really matter, interfere with my running the country. This is exactly the narrative he was aiming for when he chose not to ask for the postponement of the hearing. Had he done so, the judges would probably have set an alternate date for a good few more months.

But Netanyahu understands very well what those who want to settle accounts with him in the name of justice and remove him from the political arena fail to internalize. Holding the discussions under fire will create invaluable propaganda material that the prime minister's media team knew how to exploit to the last drop.

It's amazing that so many concepts have been broken in the past two months, but the old habits of both sides have remained fixed as if they had been poured into concrete.

The court administration should not have waited for Netanyahu to ask for a postponement, but rather announced that his trial had been postponed as long as the war continued. It makes sense: no mother of a soldier in Gaza or a member of a family of abductees wants his prime minister to be preoccupied with what's happening in court now, instead of concentrating on waging the war. Netanyahu looked exhausted anyway. There is no need to add more worries to it now.

The pursuers of justice claim that postponing the trial until the end of a war will cause him to prolong it indefinitely, because the motivation to escape the fear of justice will be more important to him than the blood of our soldiers. I find it hard to believe that the prime minister will be able to wage a never-ending war, with great losses, because until now he preferred to avoid confrontations at all costs, rather than "enter Rabac," like Ariel Sharon, for example.

Perhaps the files of the thousands will be frozen for a while, but Netanyahu will not be able to escape the public trial that awaits him at the end of the war, which is many times larger than them and more legally established than the vast majority of them. And when he stands on the public stand in front of the people, with 1,400 murdered and 139 abductees to serve as prosecution witnesses against him, surrounded by wide circles of relatives and friends who suffer from the trauma of that Shabbat, it will be difficult for him to refute the facts, even if he tries with all his might to shift the blame to the army and the security and intelligence forces.

Dead and kidnapped people are not champagne or expensive suits or jewelry. The anger accumulated in the great disaster that befell us has not yet burst out, because of the fighting and the abductees who are still held captive by Hamas. And it will happen, sooner or later. Let Netanyahu win the war, and history bring him to justice and sentence him to the punishment he deserves. And it will be heavier than what a panel of judges in the Jerusalem District Court can give.
