2023-12-08T08:08:21.148Z

Highlights: More and more French people are turning to second-hand gifts for Christmas. In 2022, demand for consumer goods increased by 32% compared to 2021. The average budget for gifts at €345 for this year, down €21 from last year. Inflation is forcing 66% of respondents to reduce their holiday budget. But at the same time, 64% of them do not want to restrict themselves. The "Games" family has the strongest seasonality at Christmas. 29.5% of annual demand is concentrated in November and December. Electronics also account for a significant part of volume demand.

From a simple option, it has become a habit. More and more French people are turning to second-hand gifts for Christmas.

"For us, the trend is still rising. Year after year, it is growing in certain categories such as toys, games, decorations, tech products and even fashion," says Amandine de Souza, the general manager of the Leboncoin website. "In 2022, demand for consumer goods increased by 32% compared to 2021 and by 120% compared to 2019. Last year especially, we achieved a record number of visits to categories in which Christmas shopping takes place on the first weekend of December. For example, it was around +40% on December 4, 2022 alone compared to the previous year. All this proves that there is a real craze for second-hand gifts."

This reality is also reflected in the study The French and the end-of-year holiday budget, published last month by OpinionWay for Sofinco*. "Inflation - which seems to be stabilising - is still weighing heavily on households and will inevitably have an impact on Christmas gifts again this year," admits Jessie Marius, director of research for the polling institute. Today, the French are experiencing real restrictions and making choices when it comes to end-of-year purchases. They don't give gifts to so many people anymore, and some even turn down invitations to avoid having to make them. As a result, everyone is looking for alternative solutions, via second-hand products but also meals with cheaper products, all using payment facilities. People make a real effort to stay within the envelope they have set for themselves. »

An average budget of €345

For example, inflation is forcing 66% of respondents to reduce their holiday budget. But at the same time, 64% of them do not want to restrict themselves. It's a bit paradoxical. "As they want to celebrate Christmas, the French anticipate spending. Black Friday has become essential for shopping with promotions and at a lower cost. In fact, 35% even save all year round for this period," explains the polling specialist.

The study estimates the average budget for gifts at €345 for this year, down €21 from last year, but with big disparities depending on the income of the people surveyed. Households earning more than €3,500 per month will spend €517, those aged 65 and over €478, French people with children €363, households below €2,000 will spend around €215 for gifts and households aged 18 to 24 will spend €164.

"Everything is good to finance your purchases at this time. The French use their income but also their savings, vouchers or gift vouchers and now even use payment in several instalments or deferred," notes Jessie Marius. A trend that is still not very much felt by Leboncoin.

"We offer facilities for purchases between €150 and €2,000, but this remains a small part of our transactions because our baskets are often lower," says Amandine De Souza. On the other hand, yes, there are real tensions on purchasing power and as a result, we want to buy differently, more responsibly. The "Games" family thus has the strongest seasonality at Christmas. 29.5% of annual demand is concentrated in November and December. Electronics also account for a significant part of volume demand. This is the first category consulted in the last two months of the year in 2021 and 2022. Finally, fashion is also a trend that stands out from other families. You can buy an outfit just for the holidays on our website. From now on, we really don't hesitate to make a nice second-hand gift to our loved ones, to the people we love. »

The e-commerce site has also seen other sections explode in recent years. As a result, there are now 150,000 ads for Christmas decorations, compared to 25,000 just three years ago.

Second-hand and useful

According to the study, games and toys are the most popular choice for 48% of respondents, ahead of clothing (43%) and books and comics (41%). Far behind are accessories such as bags or scarves (28%), jewellery (23%) or other cultural products such as CDs or vinyl records (23%) or decoration and high-tech products (22%).

"Opportunity is a habit as well as an exceptional event. Before, second-hand was made for personal purchases. Today, not only are they being offered, but they are being asked to do so. New is less sacred to a whole section of the population who are aware that they can please or treat themselves to products that would be more expensive new, precisely. This is particularly true among those under 35 years of age. One in two of them give such gifts. And that doesn't stop us from spoiling the children, who are always at the centre of our concerns. By the way, the other movement is the second-hand gift and... useful. Parents are increasingly asking themselves the question: what does my or your child need before they go Christmas shopping?" concludes the director of studies.
