Single-use plastic will be banned in mid-2021.

Edeka is apparently trying to simply change the name of the goods.

Or is there more to it?

The supermarket takes a stand.

Munich - Many products made of single-use plastic are to disappear from the EU-wide from July 2021.

This includes, for example, straws or plastic cutlery.

Other products that cannot be banned due to the lack of ecological alternatives are to be given a special label that indicates to consumers that they cannot be recycled.

Furthermore, environmental pollution in the EU is being combated with a new plastic tax.

However, it will be a few months before the guidelines for retailers are in place.

Edeka is accused of misleading manipulation: The photo from a branch shows how plastic cutlery was labeled “reusable”, available for just under two euros in a pack of ten.

Edeka with a supposed plastic trick - angry comments follow

The supermarkets have actually committed themselves to the fight against the flood of plastic.

Are we dealing with a case of embellished product descriptions that are supposed to conceal the environmental damage of the article?

Angry comments quickly accumulate under the corresponding Facebook posts:

  • "Brazen.

People are generally sustainable and environmentally friendly.

And then you do exactly the opposite of what you say ... responsibility?

    - Nothing! "

  • "This is typical behavior and as long as the policy does not take rigorous action, nothing will change"

However, in this case there is obviously a downside of the coin: Could it be that the supermarket is not making any false claims here?

Some Facebook users point out that there are certainly plastic cutlery and tableware that can be used multiple times: “There are actually very stable versions of plastic tableware.

I suspect this is the new loophole ”speculates a user.

Edeka: Declared single-use plastic as reusable?

Supermarket defends itself

In fact, the cutlery range from Edeka seems to be more stable plastic that does not have to be thrown in the trash after a single use.

Instead, it should be washable and reusable.

The marketing department of the supermarket has taken a stand and defends itself against the accusation of a user with an explanation: “The quality of the article clearly stands out from a single-use article.

The plastic is thicker and more shatterproof and can even be cleaned in the dishwasher.

The article is not comparable to a disposable article. "

However, the critics are not satisfied with this reference.

The accusation is that customers who buy such plastic cutlery would still treat it like single-use plastic and then throw it away instead of washing it up: "It is pure hypocrisy to portray oneself as environmentally conscious in TV advertising and in reality use single-use plastic items under a new guise for sale ”, is an angry comment.

If nothing is done about the plastic flood worldwide, a bitter scenario threatens to become a reality - that at some point there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish:

Lose weight and finally eat healthy?

A good idea, but there are some foods that are considered healthy but are actually sham packs.
