Because not all nurses want to be vaccinated, the Prime Minister is thinking aloud about compulsory vaccination.

Home managers consider this counterproductive.

  • More than half of all nurses have been vaccinated so far - and the number is rising.

  • Nevertheless, Prime Minister Markus Söder is thinking aloud about compulsory vaccination.

  • Home managers in the Freising district consider this to be the wrong approach and give their reasons for it.

District

- The situation in the senior citizens' home in Marzling shows how devastating Corona can rage in nursing homes.

There were six fatalities as of Tuesday.

Cases like this make Prime Minister Markus Söder think aloud about compulsory vaccinations for nurses.

The FT asked two homes how the advance was received in homes in the district.

Most of the senior citizens in care have been vaccinated - both in the Heiliggeistspital in Freising (95 percent) and in the Schönblick senior citizen park in Nandlstadt (86 percent).

When it comes to staff, well over half have also had the first poke.

Markus Khauer, head of the Nandlstadt nursing home, spoke of a vaccination rate of over 76 percent.

Andreas Knott, head of operations at the Heiliggeistspital, cannot give an exact number.

"But the trend is increasing." This is also confirmed by BRK district chief Albert Söhl.

Vaccine skepticism: The fear of side effects predominates

The main motivation for those who have so far avoided the prick is likely to be fear of the side effects.

“Everyone thinks it's something new that hasn't been explored enough.

Research into this type of vaccine has been going on for 25 years, ”says Khauer.

Knott is certain that some nurses wanted to wait and see.

"Now that you can see that nothing bad is happening, put your shyness off." But even worst-case scenarios like the one in Marzling would increase willingness to vaccinate.

Khauer believes that it will increase again if it is scientifically proven that the vaccine not only prevents the disease with Covid-19, but also that the virus is passed on.

One thing is certain: there were no side effects in almost all vaccinated people.

"With the exception of a few arm-pulling, there were no side effects at all," says Knott, and Khauer adds: "We have so far vaccinated 103 doses, and not a single resident has had side effects."

Compulsory vaccination: "Can we really afford it?"

For Khauer himself it was natural to get vaccinated.

"That was a great relief for me in my head." For him, the minimal risk of a vaccination is in no relation to a corona disease.

"In this respect, I see it as very lucky that we are already receiving the vaccine, which many others have to wait for." This is exactly how he communicated it to his staff.

Nevertheless, Khauer is skeptical about compulsory vaccinations for nurses.

“Ultimately, everyone should remain in control of their body.” A decision to be vaccinated could have negative effects on the industry.

“Let's assume that about 20 percent do not want to be vaccinated.

Then they are out of care.

Can we really afford that in view of the shortage of care? "

Andreas Knott also believes that some old people's homes could then get into personnel difficulties.

"Nevertheless, I assume: The vaccination obligation will come."
