Neuer sings in Croatian and creates controversy

2020-07-14T10:27:37.696Z

Bayern Münich's German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer created controversy in Germany after a video posted on social networks in which he is seen singing songs from a Croatian group associated with nationalist movements.

Perhaps there was another way to celebrate the double Championship-German Cup. After the Bundesliga season ended, where he clinched his 9th German championship title, Manuel Neuer flew to Croatia for a few days off before the Champions League resumption in August, accompanied by Croatian club goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalovic.

In a video, you can see the 34-year-old doorman pushing the song, carefree. Unfortunately, Neuer did not choose any song, and by taking "Lijeba li si" ("you are beautiful" in French) from the Croatian group Thompson (from the name of the weapon used during the Croatian wars), it created controversy in Germany.

Bayern explains that Neuer does not speak Croatian

Indeed, this song, deemed "nationalist, aggressive and violent" by SOS Racisme after having been taken up by Croatian supporters at Euro 2016, is also associated with a music group decried for its proximity to nationalist movements, and whose leader, Marko Perkovic, was repeatedly caught saluting a Nazi.

In order to put an end to the controversy, Bayern Münich hastened to recall that Neuer did not speak Croatian and therefore did not understand the meaning of the words.
