(CNN) -

An 8-year-old girl was expelled from a Christian elementary school after telling another student that she was in love with her, her mother said.

The incident happened last week.

Chloe Shelton, a second-grader at Rejoice Christian School in Owasso, Oklahoma, told another student that she had a crush on her, her mother, Delanie Shelton, explained to CNN.

Chloe was immediately removed from the playground, according to her mother.

The next few hours were spent in the principal's office, so he missed class time, Shelton said.

"Even before they called me, the assistant principal told Chloe that the Bible says that women can only have children with one man," Shelton told CNN.

"(The vice principal) asked me how I felt about girls liking girls and I told him I don't see any problem with that," he added.

Shelton took Chloe home that day and administrators told her not to return on Friday, she said.

The next day, the superintendent called the mother and informed her that the school was ending the "partnership" with her family, according to Shelton.

In that sense, he indicated, they also expelled his 5-year-old son.

When Shelton asked for details, the official replied that his beliefs did not align with theirs, he said.

They took me by surprise.

I was angry, hurt, betrayed, sad ... so many different emotions.

I couldn't believe it, ”Shelton said.

“I asked (the superintendent) that we have a meeting to discuss and process it better.

And he refused, saying that 'it was not necessary to discuss anything more'.

In a statement to CNN, Superintendent Joel Pepin declined to comment publicly on the case.

"Due to privacy and other factors, it is the school's policy to refrain from public comment about any individual student or family," he said.

"Sexual immorality" is grounds for expulsion, says school manual

The school manual states that "any form of sexual immorality" goes against their beliefs.

Including "professing to be homosexual / bisexual."

Students who do not "conform to the standards and ideals of work and life" in school lose the "privilege" of attending, the manual notes.

The students are also not allowed to make public displays of affection, such as holding hands, hugging or kissing, according to the document.

Pregnancy is also grounds for expulsion, although the student may be "homebound."

So other students are not "drawn to a bad example to do the same."

Shelton said she hadn't explicitly read the handbook when she first enrolled Chloe in school when she was 4 years old, for pre-kindergarten.

But he also didn't know that four years later Chloe would say she was in love with another girl.

"It was not a relationship or a practice," Shelton said, referring to the rules in the manual.

«Just a treat.

For an 8-year-old, that could mean that she really enjoys playing on the playground with her, ”he added.

Last week Chloe was initially devastated.

She cried and asked her mother if God still loved her.

After being expelled, Chloe receives hundreds of letters encouraging her

Kylie Holden, 26, is a former student of the school who attended the school in preschool through 12th grade before graduating in 2012. She identifies as bisexual.

Amid threats of expulsion, Holden said her friends waited until they graduated to share their sexual orientation.

So when he found out about Chloe's experience, those memories came back.

The thought of Chloe questioning whether she deserved God's or someone's love shook her.

"Those are the kind of harmful things that you will deal with for the rest of your life," he told CNN.

Holden posted about it on Facebook and offered to put together detail packages for the family.

People from Canada to Louisiana - most of whom have never met Chloe or have any connection to the school - reached out and offered to send money, gifts, or cards to encourage Chloe.

"I just don't want her to feel like we do," Holden said.

"I do not want him to grow up thinking that it is not worth it, because that is not true," he added.

So far, Chloe has received more than 150 messages from people across the United States, telling her how proud they are of her and assuring her that she is loved by them and by God, Shelton said.

"She feels so loved and supported now because of so many amazing people who have reached out to us," she said.

"She is excited for another start at a new school."
