A research team led by scientists from Shandong University in China, has for the first time been able to prove a new space phenomenon that was unknown to the scientific and astronomical world - Hurricane Biosphere, an area that starts at 60 km and reaches a space limit of over 600 km.
The observation on which the study is based is a huge event that occurred in 2014 over the North Pole for 8 hours.
So in fact a hurricane of charged electrons took place that revolved around a quiet center and would have looked scientifically very similar to a tropical storm occurring at sea, when in this case it was a storm with a diameter of 1000 km.
The findings of the study, including a three-dimensional demonstration of the event, were published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications, and they describe a rain of charged electrons falling towards the Earth.
The event occurred at a time when there was low geomagnetic activity, and the impact of such a hurricane could be critical, and even disrupt the activity of satellites and electronic sensors operating in space.
Professor Mike Lockwood, an astrophysicist from the University of Reading, is very impressed by the discovery and says that it is a phenomenon that probably exists in a lot of moons and planets that have magnetic fields.
He said, "This is an important scientific discovery because so far we did not even know if there was a plasma hurricane, that was a hypothesis and therefore proving it and more in the observation is an amazing thing."
"Also on Earth hurricanes and predatory storms are associated with the accumulation of enormous amounts of energy," adds Professor Lockwood.
"These space hurricanes are probably related to the large and rapid movement of solar wind energy and the movement of charged particles at the top of the Earth's atmosphere.
"Such hurricanes are actually opening a channel for the rapid transfer of energy from space to the upper parts of the Earth's atmosphere," the researchers noted in the journal Nature Communications.
"They could have a significant impact on satellite-dependent communications systems and produce errors in satellite and communications navigation systems."
The authors further noted that "research is important for understanding the relationship between stellar winds and other solar systems in the universe."
As mentioned, in terms of the form of action, although this is a hurricane based on the movement of charged particles and not on the movement of water vapor, the structure of the two storms is compatible and has many similarities to the hurricanes known in our atmosphere.
