The irreducible Gauls will land on Netflix. The streaming giant and the Albert René editions will adapt into a 3D animated series

Like that of the magic potion, the secret was jealously guarded.

Exclusively for Le Parisien, Netflix and the Albert René editions, which publish the adventures of the most famous of the Gauls, reveal that they have teamed up for the creation of the first animated series based on the adventures of Asterix.

Cherry on the menhir: the adaptation and the realization will be signed Alain Chabat, back in Gallic lands nineteen years after "Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra", greatest success of the appearances of the little hero on the big screen and third best score of all time at the French box office, with more than 14 million admissions.

For the ex-Dummies, despite everything, this project takes on the appearance of a premiere: if he has already made 5 films, he has never yet dabbled in the cartoon.

“Writing and directing an animated series has always been a dream.

I am delighted to be able to do it with Asterix, of which I have been a fan for years!

It promises to be an extraordinary adventure, ”Alain Chabat was already enthusiastic about.

A transposition of the album "Le Combat des chefs"

This original creation, produced by Alain Goldman, will be the transposition of one of the very best albums of the saga created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo: “Le Combat des chefs”, published in 1966. In this classic, the druid Panoramix loses the ball and the recipe for the magic potion after having received a menhir on the head, inadvertently launched by Obelix ... An amnesia that falls badly: Abraracourcix, leader of the irreducible Gauls, has just been challenged by one of his counterparts, Aplusbégalix, during of a battle of the leaders.

In the event of defeat, his Gallic village will come under the control of the invaders… Part of this plot has already been adapted into a feature-length cartoon in 1989, under the title “Asterix and the Menhir Coup”.

Like the recent films of Alexandre Astier ("The Domain of the Gods", "The Secret of the Magic Potion"), the series will be produced in 3D animation.

After two years of development, its release should take place in 2023. For the rest, the project is still in its infancy, and we will have to be patient to learn more, especially about the highly anticipated casting of voices.

Reaching a new generation of spectators

On the side of the Albert René editions, Céleste Surugue, its managing director, can only congratulate herself on this first collaboration with the American multinational: “This project represents a unique opportunity to make discover or rediscover the universe of Asterix to more than 200 million Netflix subscribers in more than 190 countries, and reach a new generation of viewers!

It will also help strengthen the international influence of this mythical figure of French popular culture, Asterix.

Does the little Gaul need it?

Certainly: if Asterix and its 385 million albums sold - including 200 million abroad - and its translations into 111 languages and dialects is a star in Europe, it has never succeeded in conquering the Americas, and is struggling against the manga in Asia.

For its part, Netflix, which continues to develop its animation sector, should also find its account by relying on this internationally known franchise (200 million copies sold worldwide).

Especially since the success of "Lupine", the streaming platform has been able to realize that "so Frenchy" can appeal to the whole world.
