Among the fifteen films in competition at this 71st edition of the Berlin Film Festival, there is no Italy, a lot of Germany, a little bit of France and a few splashes of the Orient.

But in the Berlinale 2021, which began on March 1, with a new 'all-Italian' artistic director, Carlo Chatrian, there is for our country in the Special section the documentary by Pietro Marcello PER LUCIO, a portrait of the artist Lucio Dalla through materials from public and private repertoire, while at Forum the film by Fabrizio Ferraro THE LUMINOUS VIEW, an impossible journey of a strange couple, director and assistant to a producer, who set out from Rome to reach Tübingen in search of the places of the poet Friedrich Hӧlderlin.

Returning to the 'reduced' competition of this singular edition of the festival (March 1-5) - which this year will have a double appointment: the first scheduled from yesterday to March 5, entirely online dedicated to the press and sector operators, the second in presence for the public from 9 to 20 June -, five German films, including NEXT DOOR, directorial debut by Daniel Brühl.

There will also be three French works, including one by Céline Sciamma, PETITE MAMAN starring two eight-year-olds and the brilliant Korean Hong Song-Soo with INTRODUCTION.

"This is a work partially shot in Berlin - said Chatrian at the presentation of the festival - starring a young man who tries to find the path of his desires".

But many surprises come from the Berlinale Special section, eleven titles from ten different countries, with films such as THE MAURITANIAN, thriller with Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahim, Shailene Woodley and Benedict Cumberbatch, for which Foster won the Golden Globe two days ago and FRENCH EXIT with Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges.

Also scheduled at Special, the Canadian director Lina Roessler who brings BEST SELLER to the Berlinale starring Michael Caine and Aubrey Plaza and then another director, the American Natalie Morales with LANGUAGE LESSONS.

Finally, again in Special TINA by Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin, a docu on the queen of Rock'n'roll.

Returning to the competition, we should also mention BAD LUCK BANGING OR LOONY PORN by Rady Jude "which returns to the festival with another irreverent and political film, a sort of radiography of contemporary Romania", as the artistic director points out.

At Encounters, a new section introduced in 2020, there is then the Canadian Denis Côté with HYGIÈNE SOCIALE.

Director Mariette Rissenbeek is keen to say about the division between Industry Event, scheduled from yesterday to March 5 with films selected only for the press, and the so-called Summer Special (June 9-20) open to the public: "We want to organize in June a great party for cinema fans, enchant the audience once again and offer them a feast for the senses "The digital edition for the film and print industry - he adds - will be just a taste" of the celebrations that will follow ".

Finally, for Italy, HUMAN FACTORS should also be mentioned, a reflection on the crisis of the modern family in our hyper-mediatized world, which will be presented in the Panorama section.

The film, already in virtual premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, is by Bolzano-based director Ronny Trocker.

Finally, in the jury of the competition of this 71st edition, our Gianfranco Rosi.
