Compared to its direct competitors in the 100% electric model segment, BMW boasts some undeniable strengths, the first of which is certainly the strategic Power of Choice approach with which the Munich Group satisfies both customer requests and stringent regulations in Worldwide.

A company that has decided to invest heavily in pure electric, but which devotes identical attention to high efficiency thermal engines (including diesel), plug-in hybrids and 100% battery systems, is able to have a vision that is not ' partisan 'of the technological future and, consequently, always remains correctly at the side of the customer, his needs and his tastes.

Bmw iX3, few details distinguish it from the other sav X

The latest addition to BMW's eco platoon, that is the sav iX3 debut in Italy (at a price without incentives starting from 69,900 euros) is the perfect demonstration of this.

This combines the advantages of moving without exhaust emissions with the driving pleasure, sporting qualities, comfort, functionality and spaciousness of a true BMW sports activity vehicle.

With the arrival of this Bev version, the X3 will therefore be the first BMW model to be available with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, with a plug-in hybrid system or an all-electric propulsion solution.

The new iX3 brings to the debut what is the other great strength of the House of Monaco: the fifth generation eDrive technology.

This propulsion system has reached a very high efficiency and has made it possible to avoid the use of disproportionately large batteries, which increase the weight of the vehicle, worsen the driving dynamics and increase the consumption of electricity.

In the iX3 the electric motor, transmission and power electronics are now arranged together in a single layout, which also benefits the flexibility of the production lines.

Furthermore, the electric motor is synchronous without the use of magnets, a solution that avoids the use of rare earths in the production of the motor.

The power density of this new electric unit is 30% higher than that of the other Bevs of the Group and reaches an estimated efficiency of 93%, significantly higher than that of combustion engines which do not reach 40%.

The BMW iX3 thus provides a maximum power of 210 kW (equal to 286 Hp) and a peak torque of 400 Nm which - unlike many other electric motors - remains high even at high revs.

The behavior on the road - as it was possible to verify in a complete test on normal roads and motorways, in the countryside between Milan and Pavia - is therefore comparable to that of the X3 xDrive30i with conventional propulsion.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is achieved in 6.8 seconds, and the maximum speed is 180 km / h, thanks to an electronic limitation system.

What is most impressive, compared to many other electric cars in this category, is the absence of a feeling of dynamic diversity: even at the wheel (and pedals) of the iX3 you drive a real BMW, which accelerates without crushing the backrest - harmful mode because it wastes electricity - and above all it activates braking recovery without annoying 'roller coaster' sensations.

The new iX3 offers adaptive recovery in which the intensity of regeneration is adapted to the situation suggested by the navigator and the sensors of the driving assistance system.

On the open road, the coasting function is activated every time the driver takes his foot off the accelerator.

As an alternative to adaptive recovery, a high, medium or low regeneration can be chosen in position D of the gear lever and in position B a strong 'one pedal' recovery.

Furthermore, sending power to the rear wheels creates a classic BMW driving experience combined with the certainty of always having maximum traction - thanks to the ARB - and exceptional efficiency.

The road holding is impeccable, also because the latest generation batteries are particularly thin and have been integrated into the underbody in a protected position.

This has lowered the center of gravity of the car by about 7.5 centimeters compared to the X3, significantly improving lateral dynamics.

Adaptive suspension - which is standard - includes electronically controlled shock absorbers, which adapt to the road surface and circumstances.

As far as autonomy is concerned, the work carried out by BMW and its suppliers has made it possible to significantly increase the capacity compared to the space occupied and its weight.

The gravimetric density (ratio between the amount of energy contained and weight) of the 188 cells of the iX3 is about 20% higher than that of the batteries of the other BMW Bevs.

A gross energy content of 80 kWh - of which 74 kWh used - and the high efficiency allow the iX3 to reach a range of 459 kilometers in the WLTP test cycle and up to 520 kilometers in the NEDC one, with electricity consumption combined of 17.8 -17.5 kWh always according to NEDC standards.

The 400 Volt system is recharged up to 11 kW in alternating current and 150 kW in direct current, in this case with the achievement of 80% of the capacity in 34 minutes.
