On January 31, the British government announced that it would allow Hong Kong residents who qualify for the British National (Overseas) Passport (BNO) to apply for a BNO residence visa.
The Thai News reported that nearly 5,000 people have applied since the application was opened for two weeks.
According to reports, half of the applicants are from Hong Kong who are already in the UK. They have been temporarily resettled in the UK in order to escape the influence of the national security law of the port area and are awaiting new signing approval.

The United Kingdom accused China of violating its commitments in the Sino-British Joint Declaration by deciding to open BNO residence visas, allowing those who have obtained visas to live in the United Kingdom and granting them the right to apply to become British citizens.
The UK estimates that about 300,000 Hong Kong people will use this policy to leave Hong Kong for the UK.
