Covid-19: a decree signs the end of masks made at home

2021-01-21T21:34:45.420Z

The Ministry of Health Olivier Véran confirmed that "it was recommended to no longer use homemade masks". A decree will be promulgated

The masks made in the home, it's over.

As recommended by the High Council of Public Health (HCSP) at the beginning of the week, homemade masks and category 2 fabric masks are now banned.

These protections are considered too permeable against the English variant "more contagious, even much more contagious", according to Olivier Véran.

“The High Public Health Council considers that category 1 masks for the general public which filter more than 90% of particles are sufficient and that it is not necessary to migrate to surgical models or FFP2, explains the Minister of Health .

The advice recommends not to use the homemade mask anymore and I do it myself.

Its capacities are not filtering enough.

»If category 1 masks retain at least 90% of 3 micron particles, category 2 masks only filter 70% and all other protections not approved or sewn at home have no measurement and are therefore banned.

The turn is clear for millions of French people who had to hastily equip themselves in the spring in a context of shortages.

Most of these models, not certified, are now obsolete.

Jean-Paul Hamon, honorary president of the Federation of Doctors of France, does not hide his annoyance: "So now, they are going to flip the masks?

How will they know if they are Category I or II?

Frankly, the government has no better business ... Let it focus on vaccine stocks instead.

Lots of people can't afford to buy them and make them themselves, are we going to fine them?

We must not push.

The main thing is that they wear one.

"

"There will not be controls overnight"

A decree will be published this Friday, making the use of compliant models mandatory.

Matignon calms things down on this sensitive subject: “In any case, there will not be overnight checks on the filtration level of the masks, moreover it is not even written on it.

What we are asking is that it be the norm from now on for everyone to protect each other and we clearly want to send this message to the French.

"

How, starting today, to equip yourself with the right masks?

"The only way to verify the approval of masks is the logo on the packaging," explains Maud Mingeau, pharmacist in Saint-Ouen (Seine-Saint-Denis).

We have it, but there is less demand.

We mainly sell surgical masks.

The latter have returned to their initial price, around 10 cents per unit, while category 1 masks cost between 5 and 10 euros and are washable between 5 and 50 times.

“You have to wash them at 60 degrees and dry them properly,” says the pharmacist.

Each record is different.

"

Olivier Véran also took advantage of his time on TF 1 to announce the dispatch of "45 million masks to 7 million French people whose situation does not allow them to equip themselves".

Masks that will be category 1.
