Difficult candidate choice

The CSU, but also other parties, have major problems nominating their Bundestag candidates.

Guilt is, you guessed it, Corona.

Erding - For the CSU in the federal constituency of Erding-Ebersberg it is clear: Andreas Lenz is to be elected for his third term in the Bundestag on September 26th.

Both district associations have passed unanimous resolutions on this.

There is no rival candidate in sight.

The problem is: his party cannot officially nominate the 39-year-old until further notice.

This is due to Corona and the ban on holding events.

While the CDU may elect a new chairman on Saturday without a party conference, the statutes forbid the district associations.

They stipulate: Election meetings must be held - in real, not virtual.

And several at that.

First of all, the local associations must determine their delegates, then the district associations.

And in the end, 160 delegates from both districts elect the candidate.

"To be honest, we don't yet know how to do it," said Erdinger CSU district leader Martin Bayerstorfer a little at a loss - and does not look at the Greens without envy.

They had used the low number of infections in early autumn to put Christoph Lochmüller from Hohenlinden on the shield.

"I hope that we can hold the meetings in the spring, if necessary in the open air," says Bayerstorfer confidently.

He doesn't believe in a surprise anyway.

He is not nervous: “We still have a lot of time, and a long election campaign cannot be mediated in these times anyway.” The CSU is not alone.

With the exception of the Greens, no party has yet nominated its candidate.

However, the SPD already knows who it wants to bet on in September: Magdalena Wagner from Egmating.
